Recently, during a collaboration with a hotel institute to access students' CVs, a crucial point was brought to my attention. The managers of the institute told me clearly: ‘We do not make our students work as slaves’. This statement struck me deeply and I asked them to elaborate. They told me about the negative experiences of some students who, during internships abroad, were forced to work 14-hour shifts and sleep in dormitories with only one shared bathroom. These situations, unfortunately, also occurred in a country like Switzerland, known for its high quality of life. This experience made me reflect on the importance of not only understanding the needs of employers, but above all of creating a welcoming and respectful working environment for candidates. As human resources professionals, we have a responsibility to provide humane employment positions. 👨🏫 Lessons Learned 1. Understand and Respect Workers' Rights: Ensuring that working hours are reasonable and living conditions are decent is crucial. It is not acceptable for interns or seasonal workers to be forced to work excessive shifts and live in precarious conditions. 2. Provide Opportunities for Growth: Internships and seasonal jobs should be learning experiences that allow students and young professionals to grow and develop their skills, not exploitative situations. 3. Create a Welcoming Work Environment: It is essential that workers feel respected and valued. Don’t Let Temporary Roles Define Your Future To my fellow international students in Canada, let me remind ourselves: You are here for a reason, and while most of us start our journeys with survival jobs, that is not your ending. Your time working part-time or in customer service roles is a stepping stone, not your destination. These jobs teach you resilience, adaptability, and the value of hard work. But don't let them define your long-term goals. You came here to grow, learn, and succeed in your field. Whether you're studying business, IT, healthcare, engineering, or another discipline, it's the skills you're building in school and beyond that are going to be the key to your future. Here's what I encourage you to do: 1️⃣ Set Clear Goals: Know what you want to achieve and keep that vision alive. 2️⃣ Network Relentlessly: Those relationships with professors, other students, and industry players will serve you in so many ways. Ministry of Human Resources has introduced the 1:3 Internship Policy through Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp), with the aim to align expatriate hiring with local talent development. Starting 15 February 2025, it will be mandatory that companies offer structured, paid, and quality internship placements under the National Structured Internship Programme (MySIP) for every expatriate hired. Set to take place from 15 February 2025 to 31 December 2025 for the pilot stage, the policy enables local talent to gain industry-relevant experience, enhance workforce readiness while companies get to benefit double tax deductions for incurred costs in internship programmes. The official implementation will take place from 1 January 2026. In a series of frequently asked questions, the Ministry and TalentCorp highlighted that the need to implement the policy lies in the growing need for quality internships or work-based learning opportunities for 250,000 to 280,000 students who make up 2% of the workforce. Through the implementation of the policy, more than 100,000 internship or work-based learning placements can be created annually, which in turn would strike a balance between expatriate needs and the development of the industry-ready local talent.
