🙌 Non-violent social movements 🌍 Note 1: Successful social movements always try to engage in the concluding step that civil rights leaders see as essential: reconciliation. Without it, the fight is just sound and fury. They seek to provoke a crisis that would force their foes to come to the negotiating table. There they would try to find a resolution, and after that, they would take the last step of engaging in post-crisis efforts to bring the two sides together—not to love or embrace each other, but at least to find a peaceful way forward. Today marks the solemn anniversary of the murder of Stephen Lawrence, a tragic event that deeply impacted Britain and ignited a crucial dialogue about discrimination and racism in our society. In the wake of this senseless act, it became evident that a profound re-evaluation was necessary to address systemic inequalities and nurture a culture of inclusivity and equality for all. As we pause to reflect on this pivotal moment, it's imperative to acknowledge the enduring significance of initiatives such as the Public Sector Equality Duty. This duty embodies a steadfast commitment to advancing equality and combatting discrimination across the public sector, ensuring that every individual is treated with dignity and respect, irrespective of race, gender, disability, or any other characteristic. However, despite the strides made since 1993, the journey towards genuine equality remains ongoing. We must persist in advocating for policies and practices that challenge prejudice, dismantle barriers, and cultivate opportunities for all to flourish. Together, let us honour the memory of Stephen Lawrence by reaffirming our unwavering dedication to constructing a fairer, more inclusive society for generations to come. #StephenLawrence #Equality #Inclusion #SocialJustice

After Richard Rothstein wrote "The Color of Law," a book that details how racial segregation was created intentionally through racist policy choices. These past decisions bears responsibility for today's most serious social and economic problems. People asked-- how can we solve this problem? Richard tapped his daughter Leah, who has extensive experience on housing policy to identify solutions. Join CALRC to hear from Leah and Richard Rothstein about their new book "Just Action" which describes how we can begin to address racial segregation, and provides dozens of strategies local groups can pursue to redress segregation in their own communities. By starting with achievable local victories, we can build a national movement that can remedy our unconstitutional racial landscape. Register for #CALRC Now: https://loom.ly/KqnyqA8

Assistant Director of Policy, Strategy and Public Affairs at the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman
Not enough people know that the reason we have a Public Sector Equality Duty is because of the murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 and the subsequent investigations into the actions of the Police. The Duty places a proactive obligation on all state institutions to advance equal opportunities, foster good relations and take action to address discrimination and victimisation. It’s a powerful force that should run through strategy accross the public sector.

Today is the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. The Stolen Generations are First Nations people who suffered serious trauma because of the racist Australian government policies of forced child removal. The discriminatory removal of First Nations children is continuing. Racism against First Nations people in Australia has had, and continues to have, devastating consequences. And an apology must be backed up with action. While racist laws policies and practices continue to drive unacceptable rates of child removals from First Nations families and communities, we can all take action against racism by making a report to Call It Out. You can take action by reporting racism against First Nations people to the Call It Out racism register, whether you witness it, or experience it. Together, we can combat the ongoing denial of racism in Australia, and build a powerful evidence base and put an end to discriminatory policies once and for all. Don't stay silent on racism. Take action at callitout.com.au #fightracism #apologytostolengenerations #callitout #firstnationsjustice
