Toyota is gearing up to electrify the automotive market with the introduction of six new electric vehicles by 2026, including the eye-catching Compact SUV Concept. Revealed at the Kenshiki Forum, Toyota not only showcased several electric concept cars but also unveiled groundbreaking advancements in battery technology. By 2026-2027, the company anticipates integrating LFP batteries that promise to slash costs by a whopping 40% compared to current solutions. Moreover, a revolutionary solid-state battery technology is slated to emerge around the turn of 2027-2028, potentially elevating the efficiency and performance standards of EVs. The GM #EV numbers for 2023 are worse than I imagined. It delivered 75,883 electric cars this past year, of which just 18% (13,838) use its new Ultium platform. The other 82% were Bolt EV + EUV—which it has taken out of production. Hyundai-Kia + the Chinese certainly aren't waiting. Did an interview with AP last night on the SAE NACS standard, and then right on cue today, VW announces it will adopt the NACS connector. VW, Audi, Porsche and Scout will all be adopting NACS beginning in 2025. But one of my biggest beefs with all of the automakers is that they have been very vague on how the adapters will be distributed and at what cost (they obviously don't know yet on the cost part). VW press release says: "... the brands are exploring adapter solutions for existing vehicles." If the automakers charge EV owners say $200 for the adapter and force you to go pick it up at the dealer that you will rarely need to go to because it is an EV after all, I predict that maybe only 50% of owners will end up with adapter sitting in their frunk or other storage area. https://lnkd.in/dunBCAFs

General Motors has realized it might have gone a half-step too far, too fast for today's new vehicle market. After previously calling hybrids a "half-step" it could skip en route to a future of fully electric vehicles, GM is changing strategy amid weaker-than-anticipated EV demand and the likelihood of tougher emissions rules later this decade. CEO Mary Barra said the automaker still envisions a zero-emission light-duty vehicle portfolio in North America by 2035 but will bring back plug-in hybrids to help get there. The reversal comes four years after GM discontinued the Chevrolet Volt, a car that largely introduced Americans to the concept of a plug-in hybrid but fell far short of sales expectations. https://lnkd.in/ebc38XwE

Very interesting article. I was not aware that HEV vehicles are outselling EVs in the US and PHEVs only account for ~1% of the new car sales. Today’s HEV, e.g. a Toyota Prius gets ~57 mpg and does not need to be plugged in to charge the battery.
