Ford news from this morning...the automaker is doubling down on its strengths: vans and trucks! Just make them electrified. Ford axed plans to produce a new 3-row electric SUV and is instead pivoting to an affordable mid-size pickup truck on its new skunkworks platform, along with a commercial van. And OF COURSE, there are hybrids. The 3-row will have a new home as a hybrid vehicle to woo roadtrippers with extended range offerings. The long-awaited successor to the F-150 Lightning EV is being delayed...again. New launch time is 2H of 2027. Market seems to be liking this news: Ford stock up about 2.5% this morning.

Ford Motor Company is cancelling plans for a large electric sport-utility vehicle and expects to take $1.9 billion in related special charges and write-downs as automakers continue adjusting their EV plans because of softer-than-expected demand. The automaker said it would delay plans for an electric three-row SUV by two years to a 2027 release date. On Wednesday, the company said it is scrapping the model altogether, citing tough pricing pressure as automakers resort to aggressive discounts to move their EVs. Ford instead will offer a hybrid gas-electric version of a future large, three-row SUV, a popular vehicle category that includes the brand’s Explorer and Expedition nameplates. The company also pushed back the launch of a new electric pickup truck by one year, until 2027. Let me share a history about Ford and its prices a century ago. An advance in production was often accompanied with cheaper prices and then cheaper prices motivated a new round of boom in efficiency. Chinese made cars are now mainly produced by robots not workers. EVs are just transitory and the next wave of innovation will be flying cars (roads will be left for trucks). Without Evs as the base, battery tech won't be efficient enough for flying cars. Learn from Ford.

GM is joining in on the EV truck game and it’s quickly becoming a competitor of some of the top contenders in this space, including the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian RIT. The Silverado is essentially “checking all the boxes” to draw customers in this space who are willing to splurge on a “cool” and powerful EV truck. At $95,000, this is definitely a splurge. Its powerful, massive, has 440 miles of range and 24-inch aluminium tires. It makes sense to go to these lengths. To convince long-time truckers — who are used to big, loud vehicles that can perform and function all day long — to transition to an EV, these trucks have to deliver.
