Is underpinning knowledge a dead concept in vocational training. There have been several academic papers written over the years looking to define underpinning knowledge, and some current practices would indicate it is not understood. If an apprentice demonstrates he or she can create and maintain a vacuum of below 500 microns, does this indicate they have a deep understanding of why this is required, and the system consequence of poor evacuation practices. Why does the training package still require a electrical/refrigeration apprentices to use a file, hacksaw and tap a thread when there are multiple cordless power tools that perform the same function. Clearly because it develops basic hand skills and an underpinning knowledge of mechanical concepts. The examples are endless and in every unit of competence. Will the skills gap ever be closed if a true depth of knowledge is not developed and assessed during an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships have been around since the Middle Ages in Europe, a concept where the experienced pass on their knowledge and skills to the inexperienced. This no longer seems to be a valued partnership in a world of constant change and disruption. You definitely need innovation to drive change but innovation requires depth of knowledge.

One of the key reasons businesses work with our partnership in delivering their apprenticeship provision is the project led nature of our approach. Take the Lean Manufacturing Operative Level 2 standard as a case in point. Our partners at Barnet and Southgate College are delivering the learning for this standard to team members at a world class OEM/Tier 1 precision engineering solutions provider to the automotive industry. One of the multiple projects within the programme involved process mapping the rear cover assembly for an iconic digger/excavator – and the results speak for themselves: https://lnkd.in/eXdn8_af #leanmanufacturing #lean #apprenticeshiplevy #apprenticeships #roi #automotiveindustry #automotive #apprenticeships #levy #traininganddevelopment

As part of celebrating National Apprentice Week, we chatted with one of our recently qualified apprentices, Harry Dawson, to find out what he enjoyed and learnt from his apprenticeship with LB Bentley. Harry recently completed his apprenticeship an NVQ Level 3 – Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technician. Q: What do you like about Engineering and what appealed to you about completing an Advanced Mechanical Engineering Technician apprenticeship? Harry: What appealed to me was this apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to use my initiative, and I enjoy and excel in the problem solving aspect of engineering. Q: What skills have you gained on this apprenticeship? Harry: I would say the fundamental skills I have gained that I use on a day to day basis are problem solving, general machining and CNC knowledge and probably the most important is self confidence in my own abilities. Q: What other things have you learnt on the apprenticeship? Harry: Team work and learning that everyone has an integral part of being a team member. Also, learning more about the production engineering and product design. Q: What are the strengths you have developed over the apprenticeship? Harry: I have learnt to be more resourceful and have developed my initiative to think of other ways to approach problems and find solutions. If you want to find out more about LB Bentley’s apprentice program and become a successful graduated apprentice like Harry, visit our website apprenticeship page via the link below: https://lnkd.in/g5zNGvmc #apprenticeships #engineering #CareerGrowth #CareerDevelopent #Careers #Learning #Skills #LBBentley

Investing in new machinery and technology is important, but it's equally important to invest in the next generation of engineers.
Hi guys, I'm writing to ask if anyone can help my son Jack. He is coming to the end of a T level 3 course in Mechanical engineering. He tried for a while to find an apprenticeship in engineering but unfortunately it's like a lottery as there are multiple people putting in for each role. He made the decision to stay on at college to work for a HNC qualification then going for the HND in general engineering. Having received the preliminary offer from the college he thought that was all sorted. However the college has just cancelled the course leaving Jack with nothing. Not to say he is absolutely gutted. Jack is a really nice, hard working young man and I'm proud to call him my son, he's just turned 18, a driver with his own car. He left school high grades reflecting the hard work he puts into everything he does. All that said can anyone help him find an apprenticeship, we are based in Sunderland, Northeast of England, but he is happy to travel. Any help will be greatly appreciated 🙏.

BLOG: Heritage Apprenticeships and how to get one. We are very proud to support the Heritage Skills Academy at Bicester Heritage and Brooklands Museum. Without the support of their amazing staff over the last 5 years we would have struggled to have put together the Project Shop Team. We can only support a few young talents at a time, but the industry is crying out for new blood. Here are our top tips for being successful in finding a foothold in Heritage Engineering. https://lnkd.in/dg_3DQ7Y
