Happy Civic Holiday from all of us at TPI Companies! 🌞⛱️ The August long weekend is celebrated across Canada (but not for all provinces & territories), although it is known by different names and has varying significance in different provinces and territories. Here are some fun facts about this holiday weekend in Canada: 1. Multiple Names: While commonly referred to as Civic Holiday, the name varies across Canada. In Winnipeg it is known as Terry Fox Day; in Alberta, it's Heritage Day; in Nova Scotia, it is known as Natal Day (marking the founding of the Halifax-Dartmouth area); and in Nunavut, it’s Nunavut Day. 2. Provincial and Territorial Differences: The holiday is not uniformly recognized across all provinces and territories. Sadly Quebec, the Yukon, Newfoundland and Labrador do not observe the holiday. 3. Historical Celebrations: The origins of the Civic Holiday can be traced back to the 19th century, aimed at giving workers a break during the summer months. It was seen as a way to provide a respite from the hot summer weather. 4. Local Festivities: Many regions host local festivals, parades, concerts, and fireworks during the long weekend. For those who celebrate, we hope you have a relaxing and safe long weekend! #TPI #TPICompanies #PatchTechStaffing #Permasearch #Truckker #Workker

What did Canada Day used to be known as pre-1983? Today, July 1st, marks the anniversary of Canada’s confederation in 1867 when three British colonies - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (later to become Ontario and Quebec) - united to form the 'Dominion of Canada'. Originally called ‘Dominion Day’, the holiday was renamed as ‘Canada Day’ in 1982, seen as a modern shift away from colonial-era terminology. The interesting difference between a ‘colony’ and a ‘dominion’ is that the latter has attained a degree of self-governance whilst remaining loyal - in this instance - to the ethos of the British family, or Crown. Functions of the Crown in the Dominions are not undertaken personally by the sovereign but by a governor-general, appointed by the sovereign (Oxford University Press). Mary Simon is the current governor general of Canada, and is the first Indigenous appointment to the role. She became the 30th governor general of Canada on 26th July 2021. CELEBRATIONS As with many celebrations around the world, fireworks play a central role, with people gathering in parks and waterfronts across the country to see the night skies light up. Many Canadians dress in the national colours of red & white, attending parties and cultural activities, which may include historical reenactments (Halifax) or Indigenous ceremonies (Winnipeg). According to website ‘Ramblyn Jazz’, the day brings mixed feelings amongst Indigenous cultures, due to historical injustices. Though Indigenous communities frequently do use the day to showcase their cultures and contributions to Canadian life. In Montreal, where I spent two-years, this year’s main event will be a family focussed affair in the Old Port of Montreal, which is a fun and vibrant part of the city, full of bars, restaurants and a zip wire for those feeling more daring. In addition to the main celebrations at the Old Port, various Montreal neighbourhoods organise their own Canada Day events. For example, Pierrefonds-Roxboro on the opposite shore of Montreal island, hosts a parade, amusement park, and fireworks. I write a lot about travel and tourism and how collective destination marketing efforts can lift up the economy of an entire area. As we’ve watched swaths of our country devastated by hurricanes, the need for lifesaving basics has been overwhelming and immediate, and we are happy to find and share ways to help right now. Looking ahead, these communities, especially those places where tourism is crucial to the economy, will continue to need our help. We have a family member who works in the River Arts District in Asheville, and while they are still without power, when I ask what we can do, the answer is to visit in the spring and shop local businesses. Whether you’re able to do your holiday shopping online from affected businesses or you’re able to plan a trip, when it’s safe and makes sense, let’s keep in mind how travel and tourism can revitalize communities and support local, handmade, home grown businesses for generations to come. https://lnkd.in/evgSp4bS
