It’s okay to experience guilt but try not to let it overwhelm you. Please recognize that you’re human, and no one can do it all. Accept your emotions and permit yourself to feel them. 💙 Involve Other Family Members: Include family members in the decision-making process. Discuss the situation openly and seek their input. Sometimes, sharing the responsibility can alleviate guilt and provide a broader perspective on what’s best for your loved one. It can also strengthen family bonds and ensure everyone is on the same page. 💙 Seek Support and Self-Care: Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about your feelings. Guilt can be isolating, but sharing your emotions with others who understand can be comforting. It’s Quiet Uptown (ref: Hamilton. Lin-Manuel Miranda) As Mother’s Day is now a week in the rear view mirror, I am reminded every week, and each day, how much I miss my daily call. I miss just knowing that someone will always pick up the phone. Someone who, no matter what, provided unconditional support to those around her. The loss is unimaginable. Did I do enough to show support the other way? Did she really take with her the knowledge that she was loved? Did she know how she was the thread holding together so many diverse and loving panels? The loss is unimaginable. In Lin-Manuel’s Hamilton, he shares:  “There are moments that the words don't reach - There's a grace too powerful to name - We push away what we can never understand -We push away the unimaginable…” Is is within the sprit from Lin-Manuel’s lyrics where I grew more aware that there is no way we can be ready for losing a loved one. The rush of emotions and feelings that we missed something. We feel unyielding guilt. We feel confused, lost, and afraid. We are walking into an unimaginable journey. So What?  What can I do? Can I be ready? Yes, you can be ready – mostly. Keep in mind, that the loss of a loved one is something that we can never be ready for, but just know that as the pain subsides, our memories are cleansed. The bright and warm memories grow stronger and push away the “other” memories – that is at least my experience and the experiences of many others. Some things we CAN do and some things that could allow comfort is understanding three key things. One is community; another is knowledge; and the third is confidence. (There are many more, but these three are a good start.) SOBERING HEART ATTACK A memory you will NEVER forget. Paramedics arrive. Their skilled hands and calm demeanor provide some level of assurance that you will survive. White-walled hospital room. Monitors constantly beeping. You were never more grateful to see your wife at your side. Tears in her eyes. Mixture of relief and fear in her heart. Emotion beyond words. As you recovered from your heart attack and stent placement, you had an unusual amount of time to yourself. Your attention shifted to what is most meaningful. Without your health, what else is there?
