Transformation in sport … Amongst many agendas in the last 3 years working with The FA, the overriding theme has been ‘transformation’ with the original funding for my work in the NLS via DCMS. Ironically, this included Horse Racing amongst 5/6 other sports connected to post covid recovery, therefore this article in the trade paper Racing Post, turned my head this morning. Those of us who follow racing will be aware of the challenges the sport faces have not just appeared. Additionally, with Irish and French racing either side of the water offering an ever increasing compelling offer, transformation or ‘radical change’ is now surely a necessity not a choice ? Beyond the specifics related to racing, I am sure many who are working in the sporting development space- clubs, leagues and / or associations, can reasonate to so much of this Governance & Business agenda in sport - I’m fully aware racing is not alone! A challenge set by someone who with proven track record and a stakeholder the sport cannot operate without. How do racing drivers overcome the financial challenges? 🏎️ 1) Sponsorship - most common way of paying for their season! Racing drivers spend so much time contacting business owners & marketing directors to get the opportunity to “pitch their ability” ✅ Pros: When it works, it’s great ❌ Cons: Time Consuming & Not very effective 2) Family Members - Probably the most common in their early careers. Using the bank of a family member to get out there on track. ✅ Pros: Low ROI Expectations ❌ Cons: Won’t last forever and probably doesn’t stretch far 3) Business - rarely used at all by drivers Racing drivers could run their own business, providing a skill or service to individuals or businesses. This is so underrated in the racing world and would be so effective! ✅ Pros: Great way to earn money & get yourself out there ❌ Cons: Will take some time away from training activities Motorsport is expensive…but money is only a number! We work closely with Formula 1 events and have a strong passion for racing as races are a strong metaphor for life and for business. They can be absolutely grueling and there is no room for laziness or for taking a break. Racing is truly an art form. We helped our client with the launch of TEAM MIAMI, Marc Anthony’s E1 electric powerboat racing team from concept to near-champion in 1 month. How did we compress what’s typically a 3-6 month timeline into 1? Clear communication between several different stakeholders and efficient execution. E1 Series is a new all-electric racing league. E1 organizes the races and provides technical assistance; each team does the rest. First, we worked with the founding members Team Miami’s organizer to negotiate: 1. TEAM MIAMI’s business and partnership structure.  2. Negotiated Marc Anthony’s involvement as the owner and face of TEAM MIAMI, ensuring his and his team’s experience was seamless and engaging. 3. The agreement between our team and the league regarding sponsorship and licensing revenues. Then, we helped Team Miami design and close the financing to pay the league for setup fees and technical services, to hire a pilot, and other odds and ends. Nailing Marc Anthony’s involvement was central to this. We started in December of 2023, so Team Miami could race in February. They sped out of the gates, winning the first pole position in the history of the sport and then coming in second to Tom Brady’s team in the full race. Since then, they’ve risen to number 1 in the team standings and recently won the race at Marbella. It’s not often we get to see a business go from an idea to a successful outcome in such a short time. We pulled it off by precisely defining and managing the relationships between different stakeholders and their unique goals and bringing the right expertise to bear on each issue–from corporate law, to venture financing, sports transactions and celebrity licensing. Winning a local kart race is easy. Securing a spot in a professional racing team is difficult. Becoming a motorsports legend is near-impossible. Only 1% of aspiring racers make it to professional motorsports. But why is it so hard for talented drivers to reach the top? The reality of motorsport careers: 1. The financial barriers, intense competition, and physical demands often deter many talented individuals. 2. Access to top-tier equipment and training facilities is limited to those with significant funding. The main reason for this is the combination of high costs and rigorous training requirements. It's like trying to climb a mountain with limited gear and unpredictable weather—only the most resilient and resourceful make it to the summit. So, what can we do?
