#21 Hannah DeHamer Formula 1 isn’t just about speed and innovation on the track—it’s also becoming a leader in sustainability, proving that motorsport and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. I recently attended a talk at my school hosted by Aston Martin, where they shared their vision for sustainability in motorsport through their Racing Green campaign. It was inspiring to hear firsthand how they’re not just talking about change—they’re leading it. Aston Martin is committed to paving the way in creating a more sustainable future, and their approach reflects the broader shift happening across the F1 grid. For decades, F1 was seen as a fuel-guzzling, carbon-heavy sport. But in recent years, the organization has made bold commitments to reduce its environmental impact and set a standard for global motorsport. Their goal? To achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. By 2026, the sport is set to debut 100% sustainable fuel, which could have ripple effects far beyond F1, shaping the future of automotive technology for everyday drivers. But it doesn’t stop with the cars. F1 is also rethinking how it operates as an organization. From using renewable energy at circuits to reducing single-use plastics and improving waste management, sustainability is woven into every aspect of race weekends. Even logistics—one of the most carbon-intensive aspects of the sport—is under scrutiny. F1 is optimizing travel schedules, transitioning to more efficient freight systems, and exploring alternative transportation methods for teams and equipment. Hearing about Aston Martin’s Racing Green initiative made it clear that sustainability isn’t just an aspiration—it’s becoming a key element of how teams innovate and compete. Beyond the technical changes, F1 as a whole is using its global platform to spark conversations about climate change and inspire action. Sustainability in F1 is a work in progress, but it’s exciting to see a sport with such a massive footprint embrace the challenge of change. After all, the race for a better future is one we can all win.
