During the past months, the conversation surrounding #artificialintelligence in the corporate sphere has predominantly focused on the potential for competitive advantage through rapid implementation and innovation. Governments, businesses, and societal entities alike explore AI's capabilities to revolutionise industries, from automating mundane tasks to driving data-driven decision-making processes. However, this fervent pursuit of technological prowess often overlooks a critical component: the #humanfactor. The integration of AI into business operations transcends mere technological deployment; it necessitates a profound understanding of its impact on the workforce. As AI systems not only take over repetitive and time-consuming tasks, the narrative surrounding these changes typically celebrates increased efficiency and reduced operational costs. Yet, this transition also brings significant challenges that affect the workforce on various levels. One of the foremost challenges is the adaptation required by employees. Transitioning to roles that require higher levels of technical proficiency or that integrate human decision-making with AI insights necessitates not only retraining but also a fundamental shift in job descriptions and expectations. This adaptation process can be daunting for employees, particularly those with long-standing career histories in traditional roles. Companies must navigate these changes thoughtfully to mitigate resistance and increase buy-in, ensuring that employees feel valued and capable within the new system framework. C-Suite executives believe AI is key to increased productivity, yet most workforces are not ready to transform, according to Mercer’s 2024 Global Talent Trends Study Generative artificial intelligence (AI) viewed as key to increasing productivity The rapid growth in generative AI capabilities has raised hopes for workforce productivity gains, with 40% of executives predicting AI will deliver gains of more than 30%. Yet, three in five (58%) believe tech is advancing faster than their firms can retrain workers, and less than half (47%) believe they can meet this year’s demand with their current talent model. “Raising productivity through AI is top of mind for executives but the answer does not lie in technology alone. Greater workforce productivity requires intentional, human-centric work design,” said Kate Bravery, Mercer’s Global Talent Advisory Leader and author of the study. “Leading companies recognize that AI is just part of the equation. They are taking a holistic view to address drains on productivity and deliver greater agility through new models of human-machine teaming.”

It’s somebody using AI that will take your job.” Since then, we have been imagining the workforce of tomorrow, full of AI power users who are not just competent in their own right, but successfully engage with AI tools to achieve results. Not quite the human-robot collaborations that play out in our favorite sci-fi movies, it is well understood that some new form of collaboration between humans and machines is coming to a workplace near you, and soon.
