Morris Moor has been recognised with an Urban Renewal Award at the 2024 UDIA Awards. We congratulate and celebrate with ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, Up Property, Morris Moor and the entire project team on this achievement. What was once a collection of seven disused industrial buildings, has been transformed into a vibrant community hub in the heart of Moorabbin, blending commercial and industrial spaces. “Clarke Hopkins Clarke for Morris Moor by Up Property is an excellent example of urban renewal through an innovative approach to reuse and retain historic mid-century buildings with great industrial character. Close collaboration between builder and designers and creative problem-solving overcame the endless surprises associated with adaptive reuse, and while challenging, repurposing rather than demolishing buildings minimises embodied carbon, reduces operational carbon and construction waste, and expediates construction. Beyond bricks and mortar, the overhaul of the site’s masterplan put sustainable design and social interaction at the project’s core. Morris Moor has successfully delivered on its goal of creating a desirable, socially responsible, sustainable development that benefits the community. Its focus on supporting local businesses and organisations has fostered community and improved social and economic outcomes for the entire neighbourhood and beyond.” - UDIA Victoria Our landscape and planning teams, in collaboration with the wider project team, were instrumental in developing the vision and facilitating the re-imaging of this public place that offers diversity of experience, rewards individual discovery and nurtures new employment and creative opportunities. 📸: Robyn Oliver

Securing planning permission on difficult sites in areas like North Somerset, Dorset, South Gloucestershire, Devon, and the South Hams can feel like navigating a maze. Whether this be for a new eco home, a cohousing project for 20 dwellings, or 'just' a kitchen extension. These regions often present unique challenges; from strict conservation guidelines and sensitive landscapes to community concerns. However, at Barefoot Architects, we believe these challenges can become opportunities when approached with creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainable, regenerative design. The key to success is careful communication! Read more on our blog at https://lnkd.in/etSYPUau

We are honoured to be among the winners of the 2024 National Urban Design Awards for the Downsview Framework Plan, working with Henning Larsen, KPMB Architects, and SLA for Northcrest Developments and Canada Lands Company / Société Immobilière du Canada. The honour is bestowed by RAIC - IRAC Canadian Institute of Planners Canadian Society of Landscape Architects. Jury comments: Converting one of the largest contiguous spaces in Toronto into a nature-first community is ambitious. The 520-acre brownfield area comes with a strong history of an airport and requires a thoughtful re-integration of the city fabric across the lands. An ambitious goal that has been crafted by input from citizens, it is an example of how sustainable development can occur. Big ideas and aspirations are well bundled into this master plan with a strong focus on nature in the city. The plan focuses on six fundamental principles: nature, equity, accessibility, people, sustainable development, and transit proximity. The framework plan demonstrates good analysis of the site and its context. The plan aims to incorporate sustainable principles, connect to its surroundings, integrate public transit into its design, and create walkable communities. This project is a demonstration of how a once-negative industrial site can be transformed into a valuable resource for future generations and should be used as an example for other municipalities. https://lnkd.in/gsXrbjXt

In the late 1920s, urban planners in New York City envisioned a revolutionary project that would forever change the face of Manhattan. At the center of their bold concept was the Midtown Maritime Canal, a proposed waterway designed to link the Hudson River to the East River, cutting across the heart of the bustling city. This futuristic project aimed to accommodate large ocean liners, with a grand Manhattan Maritime Terminal positioned at the iconic Times Square. The plan was a blend of ambitious urbanism and maritime tradition, with the canal slicing through Broadway itself, necessitating the construction of drawbridges to allow the movement of ships while maintaining traffic flow. Towering skyscrapers, already beginning to define New York's skyline, would surround the waterway, creating an unparalleled fusion of urban development and maritime activity. The spectacle of ships navigating through the canal, dwarfed by the imposing structures of the city, would have transformed the landscape, blending the rhythms of land and sea in a way never before seen. Yet, as air travel began to dominate the 1930s and '40s, the maritime vision slowly became obsolete. The canal, once envisioned as a crucial component of New York's future, fell into disrepair. Ships were abandoned, their rusting hulls serving as haunting reminders of what could have been, while construction projects encroached on the space, narrowing the canal and pushing it further into the past. Though the Midtown Maritime Canal never came to be, it remains a fascinating piece of forgotten history—a lost chapter in New York's endless evolution.

There has been a lot of discussion in the media recently about the concept of the 15-Minute City and how it will change the future of urban design around the world. Chapman Taylor has been applying 15-Minute City principles on large-scale urban design projects for several years now, particularly in China. The essence of the 15-Minute City is to design an urban district so that all of the uses and amenities a person needs can be found within a 15-minute walk of where they live, with those functions placed intelligently so that the shorter journeys are for more regular trips. Our conference 'Planning, Designing and Delivering the 21st Century Neighbourhood' is underway in Galway. A joint initiative of the RIAI, The Academy of Urbanism (AoU), Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe / Galway City Council and the Greater Galway Forum, the conference promises to be a collaborative, impactful, and diverse gathering, building on the success of last year’s groundbreaking conference and the publication of the Greater Galway Charter. Taking place on 29 and 30 May, the conference will identify innovative ideas and strategies to tackle the unique challenges facing Irish and European cities, with a special focus on Galway. It will highlight the urgent need for radical reforms in current planning, design, and delivery systems to ensure the survival and prosperity of Irish and European cities and towns in the coming decades. Speaking at the Conference opening this morning in Galway, Sean Mahon, President of the RIAI said: "Architects play a crucial leadership role in urban design and the regeneration of our communities, as many of the featured projects at this conference demonstrate. The RIAI has long advocated for vision-led and plan-led development in our cities. To achieve this, we need meaningful dialogue between local authorities, professionals, and communities. For Dublin and Ireland’s larger cities, we need to embrace three-dimensional planning. 3D-planning will empower local authorities, planners, urban designers, architects, and communities to create a comprehensive digital twin of the city. Such a tool will ensure that all future development can be fully understood and evaluated.” Full RIAI Press Release is on https://lnkd.in/eHvBhyiv The event is open to anyone interested in architecture, urbanism, sustainability, and the future of Galway and other Irish cities.
