Having conversations with our patients and their families about end-of-life care, DNR status, or advance directives can be difficult but essential. These discussions, held before it’s too late, give patients a voice in their own care and can prevent them from enduring unnecessary suffering. As healthcare providers, we have a responsibility to not only save lives but to honor the wishes of those we care for. Without these critical conversations, patients may undergo aggressive interventions that may ultimately be futile, causing unnecessary pain and anguish for both them and their loved ones. Taking the time to understand and document these wishes ensures that care is aligned with the patient’s values, granting them dignity and peace in their most vulnerable moments. Voices that need to be heard

Did you know that today is National Healthcare Decision Day? National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) exists to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. I know all too well that hard conversations are difficult to start but they are more devastating to avoid! Having hard conversations about death and wishes is ten times harder when you have received a new diagnosis or experienced a scary medical incident. This is why being proactive is so crucial! Have clear minded, sober, conversations with someone you trust. Even better, communicate your wishes through a guided conversation led by a caring professionals! Seek out My husband and I initiated an advanced care planning conversation more than 8 years ago. We were still in our thirties! However, with the work we were doing in the hospital we witnessed first hand the stress, horror, and harm of inaction for those left behind. We can only control what we can control and this is one simple action you can take to help bring clarity, comfort, and ultimately peace when your time comes. #advancecareplanning #NHCDD2024 #hardconversations

We all know I am not a physician. However, it would occur to me that the information in this guide is worth reviewing. It is important to be informed about generally accepted preventative diagnostics by your age range. But, you know who is more familiar - YOUR doctor. A relationship with your primary care physician is critical to ensuring that you are on track for screenings and care based on accepted guidelines but more importantly your personal and family history. The current system is broken and not conducive to guiding personalized care. We deserve better. Let’s restore the patient and doctor relationship. Let’s remove barriers to care. This perspective is truly intriguing. Despite record-high investments and groundbreaking technology in healthcare, our outcomes are deteriorating. Why? The answer is simple: our healthcare system is more detached from patients than ever before. Data replaces physician-patient dialogue, leaving no connection or meaningful conversation. Research confirms that when patients lack trust or connection with their physician, treatment adherence plummets. While we advance in technology, we've seemingly lost touch with our humanity. Upon diagnosis, individuals require not only information and guidance but also trust in something or someone. Providing substantial information has never been more critical. Converting a brief diagnosis consultation into daily disease management is now a pressing urgency. Despite our constant chatter about patient-centric communication, we've overlooked the essential aspect – actually communicating with the patients themselves. The guidelines for conducting yourself as a physician used to be: detach from emotion for the sake of getting the job done. In order to be the best listener for our patients we first must be willing to listen to ourselves and what we as health care providers need.
