“Behind every great product there’s at least one engineer who knows the entire stack, takes problems personally, and jumps in and solves them. Without regard to ownership, credit, or chain of command. If you don’t know who this is in your company, I have bad news for you…” - Naval Ravikant

Austal USA welcomed VADM Tom Allan, U.S. Coast Guard Deputy Commandant for Mission Support, to the company’s Mobile, Ala. ship manufacturing facility for the first time last week. Vice Admiral Allan was joined by Rear Admiral Mike Campbell, Director of Acquisition Programs, Program Executive Officer (CG-93). While onsite, they toured the shipyard’s manufacturing facilities, including the site where the new 192,000 square-foot final assembly structure is being built, and discussed the company’s progress on the Coast Guard’s Heritage-class Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) program. Austal USA leadership provided an update on the production activity in the company’s highly automated steel shipbuilding production line and the new final assembly building (FA2) complete with a shiplift capable of launching and recovering the OPC. The company broke ground on FA2 this summer, which is scheduled to be operational in 2026.

For my friends from the naval surface warfare community, you'll appreciate this analogy of Constant Bearing Decreasing Range (CBDR) and its application beyond the sea. In maritime terms, CBDR describes a situation where a ship maintains a constant bearing but the range to it decreases, indicating an impending collision if no changes are made. This can serve as a powerful metaphor in our personal and professional lives. Imagine the 'constant bearing' as a challenge or problem that can cause irreparable harm to us or our team … and we we see it ahead of us—steady and unchanging in its direction. The 'decreasing range' symbolizes this issue drawing nearer as time progresses. If we do not alter our course, a collision is inevitable, resulting in crises that could have been avoided. Like seasoned captains who adjust their vessels' courses to avoid collisions, we too must be willing to change our paths when we see distracting or dangerous obstacles approaching. It’s a lesson in not only recognizing potential problems but also taking proactive steps to steer clear of them. Being aware of and responsive to the CBDRs in our lives isn't just about avoiding negative outcomes; it's about navigating towards greater success and fulfillment. As leaders and professionals, we have to commit to adjusting our bearings wisely through the seas of our careers and lives. #Leadership #Mindfulness
