🚀 TRAD, Tests & Radiations is co-funding with the CNES the PhD thesis of Gabin Charpentier on Radiation protection for crewed missions to Mars: environmental modelling, multi-layer optimization, prevention of radiation risks for astronauts. Gabin presented at the Committee on Space Research - COSPAR 2024 Scientific Assembly in Busan his simulation work performed with the TRAD 3D simulation tools, FASTRAD® and RayXpert®, as well as GEANT4.   In order to define the Martian radiation environment, the first part of his PhD work was to develop ARAMIS, the Atmospheric RAdiation Model for Ionizing spectra on Martian Surface. ARAMIS shows the best fit with experimental Curiosity measurements for photon and neutron secondary fluxes, while being in very good agreement with other models for other particle species.   With ARAMIS as an input, FASTRAD® and RayXpert® are used to test different multilayer shielding concepts for Martian habitats. The goal is to minimize both primary and secondary radiation, with a particular emphasis on neutrons, in order to reduce the biological impact on astronauts. Calculation parameters include effective dose, risk of exposure-induced death (REID) as well as equivalent dose to various critical organs like skin, Blood Forming Organs (BFOs), gonads and brain and bone surface.   🔬 The work performed in this PhD is part of the development and validation process for the new physics and new outputs that will be available in the next FASTRAD® version in 2025. Designing Moon and Martian habitats to protect astronauts from radiation will be possible! FASTRAD® to the moon and beyond!   ❓ Any questions?   📍Come see Athina Varotsou and Rémi Benacquista at the TRAD booth at NSREC ! Contact us at fastrad@trad.fr and visit www.fastrad.net

That’s great news! Way to go Gabin Charpentier and TRAD, Tests & Radiations 👏 We need to advance radiation protection of astronauts in deep space. Glad to see European efforts continuing on this front.
