2 years ago when I was writing Winning Moves, I talked to a bunch of super-successful buy-and-build CEOs/CXOs (including a few 10x'ers)... ...and a few themes kept coming up re: how to successfully grow through acquisition: ✅ Have a strategy, and stick to it. ✅ Generally, better to use acquisitions to go deeper in your core markets than wider into new, unfamiliar territory. There are exceptions, but further from the core = more risk. ✅ Pick the right markets to buy-and-build within (I talk in the book about the research on market criteria <> buy-and-build performance). ✅ Ensure you have a strong, add on-ready platform. Bolting onto a weak platform is like building on quicksand. ✅ Develop a clear value creation plan (including synergies) upfront. You want to be clear on where that value will come from—and have confidence that the juice is worth the squeeze—before stroking a big check. What else? #PrivateEquity #BuyAndBuild #SearchFunds

In M&A, there's a pervasive bias against divestitures. They’re often viewed as an admission of failure, a sign that management couldn’t make the most out of the assets they were given. But this mindset misses a crucial point: the real job of management isn't just to run assets—it’s to maximize their value. Jerome Combes-Knoke, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development & Strategy at Dotmatics, points out that many companies hold onto business units that no longer align with their strategic goals simply because selling them feels like giving up. By clinging to underperforming or misaligned assets, companies risk missing out on greater opportunities for growth and value creation. It’s time to reframe how we view divestitures.
