Forest staff wear many hats, and one of them is law enforcement. They are required to prevent, detect and investigate crimes against wildlife, and build strong cases against the offenders to ensure conviction. To help them get better at administering their role, WCT has been training frontline forest staff across various states in the country since 2012. Over the years, the training modules have evolved to also include evidence collection, site security, and the application of forensics to build watertight cases. Now, all that knowledge has been turned into something that forest staff can carry in their backpacks. The ‘Illustrated Wildlife Crime Investigation Manual for Forest Guards’, produced by WCT, with support from DSP Finance Pvt. Ltd. (formerly DSP Investment Managers Pvt. Ltd.), is like a law enforcement field guide for India’s forest staff. Intended to be used as a ready reckoner by forest staff when dealing with cases of wildlife crime, it presents the law with minimum jargon and illustrations for effective visual learning and easy recall. In addition, it also explains the processes of filing a case and prosecuting a wildlife crime step-by-step. On this #worldrangerday, i have much to celebrate, especially our Illustrated Wildlife Crime Investigation Manuals. I am fortunate to have worked on this project - from ideation to realization, with some wonderful co-dreamers and doers like Mridula Vijairaghavan Purva Variyar Anish Andheria at Wildlife Conservation Trust. These illustrated manuals are an outcome of our learnings and observations from many years of training frontline forest staff on the use of law and science to combat wildlife crime. To make an already very hard, technical and legally challenging job a bit easier, we conceived these manuals to break down jargon, to create easy recall, and to enable forest staff to overcome the fear associated with the use of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. With immense work by our illustrator Akshaya Elizabeth Zachariah, we were able to create visuals that are not too stylized and can be easily connected with. This helped bring to life our commitment to creating a tool that the forest guards would adapt to quickly and use regularly in law enforcement activities. Through clean and minimal design with simple text translated to various local languages, we were determined to highlight the chief sections of the Act and supporting evidences that forest officers ought to use while booking various wildlife offences in order to improve their chances of securing convictions. The results speak for themselves. Our trainees have praised these manuals to high heavens and have been increasingly relying on them to create watertight case work against wildlife criminals. Read the post to see some of the testimonials we have received from frontline and senior forest officers. I can't wait to see what more our trainees will achieve with the help of this simple, yet effective tool. Wildlife criminals, watch out. #capacitybuilding #wildlifeconservation #toolsandtechnology

Anti-wildlife trafficking operation Scent imprint for dogs Different law enforcement agencies are involved in the dogs' screening for wildlife contraband. The illegal movement of wildlife poses a public health, conservation, and biosecurity threat, however, there are currently minimal screening tools available at international ports of entry to intercept wildlife trafficking efforts. Using special trained dogs is a great fast way to screen a vehicle. Time management in those hectic places is really important. You need a way that works quickly and efficiently. #k9unit #k9 #police #borderforce #wildlifeprotection #wildlifetrafficking #wildlifetrade #snifferdogs #conservationdogs #wildlifedetectiondogs #cites #iucnredlist #speurhond #sifd #scentimprintfordogs #scentimprintconservationdogs

At Focused Conservation, we know that the fight against illicit wildlife trade demands more than just passion—it requires expertise, dedication, and collaboration. That's why we provide specialized training, knowledge, and resources to empower law enforcement and improve their capacity to protect wildlife. On October 15, 2024, our efforts paid off once again. Operation Silent Scorcher—a joint operation between law enforcement agencies and NGOs including Care for Wild and Focused Conservation—led to the arrest of notorious wildlife trafficking suspect Joseph "Big Joe" Nyalunga. Nyalunga, already out on bond for other serious crimes, was found with explosives and ammunition at his business premises. We will continue to apply our expertise to help protect wildlife and bring traffickers to justice. Stay with us as we push forward in this critical mission. #FocusedConservation #WildlifeProtection #ConservationHeroes #EndWildlifeTrafficking #SaveTheRhinos #StopPoaching #WildlifeTrafficking

Shipping containers screened by wildlife detection dog. Wildlife crime continues to pose a significant threat to biodiversity, local and national economies, as well as national and international security. The illicit trafficking of wildlife not only endangers countless species but also undermines the stability of ecosystems and jeopardizes the livelihoods of communities worldwide. Combatting illegal wildlife trafficking is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration across international containerized supply chains. By using wildlife detection dogs as a screening method, the screening goes faster and with a great result. #k9 #k9unit #workingdogs #combatillegalwildlifetrade #wildlifetrade #wildlifetracking #cites #scentimprintconservationdogs #sifd #scentimprintfordogs #borderforce #customsk9 #wildlifedepartment #wildlifedetectiondogs #snifferdog #dogtraining #scentworktraining #speurhond #detectiehond
