It's officially my 10th year in Sales. I started at Verizon Wireless as a retail sales rep when I finally finished my enlistment in the United States Marine Corps, I've done retail, door to door, and now B2B sales. Here is what I've learned: 1. There is no harder sales job than a door to door sales job, but it also provides some of the greatest experience you will ever get if you wish to continue a career in sales. 2. Don't be so quick to pull the trigger on your sales pitch. It's better to start slow, and focus on asking tons of questions about the customer/business, because then you will be able to pitch them in a way that specifically speaks to them. 3. Speed dating helps. In sales, you will constantly have interactions meeting new people every single day, and we all dread the awkward 5 minutes before jumping into the business. Working on the ability to break the ice and quickly will pay dividends in the long run. 4. Know when to push and know when to pull. It's ok to put the pressure on the customer, as long as you can measure how much you are applying. You most likely won't win a deal appeasing clients/customers 100% of the time. Remember, they came to you for a solution, and so it's your responsibility to hold them accountable to that. 5. Earn their trust, always be honest. Never try to hide what you can and cannot offer. At the same time, challenge their requests because there is often times an alternative solution that you can provide they weren't originally aware of. Remember you are the expert in this situation. There are plenty more, but I feel like it would be an entire book, something I've actually been looking in creating. Please, #sales experts out there, share what you've learned in sales because I'm curious to hear if it's similar or different than what I have.
