This week marked a historic milestone on the path to a #DepositReturnScheme (DRS) for England and Northern Ireland. ♻👇 The regulations for the DRS for drinks containers in England and Northern Ireland were officially approved by the House of Lords on Monday, and successfully passed through the House of Commons yesterday. The DRS is set to launch in October 2027. 📆 Every year, 6.7 billion bottles and cans go unrecycled in the UK, with drink containers making up 95% of the litter on beaches. 🏖️ Deposit return schemes combat litter, reduce waste, drive recycling and promote a truly circular economy. 🚛 ♻ Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV) Programme hub website is now live! The website has everything you need from A to Z for all things waste and street cleansing.♻🚛   This programme provides a series of tools that will assist in the transition to zero-emission specialist vehicles, and keep us updated on its progress. A timely warning to kick off BEAMA’s Annual Conference with Yselkla Farmer highlighting that #CleanPower2030 won’t be achievable without significant investment in the UK’s #NetZero supply chain and moving the policy goalposts (eg on EVs) has, and will, damage this effort! #AcceleratingElectrification

For those who think that by supporting ULEZ and LEZ, you are being ‘compassionate’ and ‘saving the planet’. Ask yourself 3 questions… ▪️ 1.4 million ULEZ fines in London so far. 33,000 in Glasgow. 6,000 in Edinburgh. Do you think these people are more likely to be from the richer or poorer sections of society? ▪️As footfall drops do you think the jobs being lost due to these schemes are high earning executive positions or at the other end of the scale? ▪️A compliant car needs to be post 2015 diesel. If someone can’t afford a diesel upgrade then a cheaper, older post 2005 petrol car is an option. Diesel emits 20% less CO2. How is encouraging people to convert back to petrol ‘saving the planet’? Unfair, undemocratic and ineffective.

A thought provoking day today at the #bettertransportconference24. A couple of the many takeaways for me were: 1) The consensus that long term, ring fenced funding, even if at a slightly lower £ level, would drive the change we need for transport indistry as whole to maximise its contribution to net zero. This help cut the waste of public money where political point scoring leads to constant change in focus at the cost of delivery as well, give all delivery authorities the confidence to proceed and industry to invest even more. That being said, an increase in funding for sustainable transport that was ring fenced would also be very welcome! 2) Whilst there will always be major projects, programmes and policies to implement sometimes a little less fanfare and slightly reduced pace of delivery through a rolling programme may actually be beneficial. This would allow lessons learnt to be reviewed and implemented to improve efficiency rather than attracting the negativity of failing to deliver and fear of launching a comparable programme. #bettertransportweek #campaignforbettertransport #sustainabletransport
