It was fantastic to represent the Department of Transport, Western Australia to discuss WA’s involvement in progressing automated vehicle (AV) reforms at the recent AITPM - Leadership in Traffic and Transport National Transport Conference in Perth. This is a complex but exciting area of transport to be involved in, and it is important that policy-makers keep up with technological progress to ensure AVs can be deployed safely and effectively. WA recently participated in a consultation process led by National Transport Commission to help establish an agreed Australia-wide regulatory approach to the use of AVs on public roads. This is an important first step to building community confidence and understanding the obligations of human AV users/occupants. In the Pilbara, AVs are already being used in a controlled mining environments with great potential to uplift mineral extraction – especially from stranded ore bodies remote from existing infrastructure. Other promising developments in WA include the testbed at Development WA's Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct - where a range of technologies can be tested and NTRO - National Transport Research Organisation / City of Joondalup plans for WA’s own Smart Mobility Living Lab – similar to the one in London, featured in the video below. It’s great to be part of the challenge to work across government and industry to ensure we have the legislation and policy groundwork in place to take advantage of the incredible opportunities AVs present for WA in the future.

Today we had our co-workers day at UAS VHL where all people involved in support and teaching of our programmes were invited. I really enjoyed the contribution of two of our key-note speakers at this event. Kees Klomp inspired me with his 4W model describing different perspectives involving quality of life: - Personal experience of life: Psychological perspective, happiness - Community and life conditions: Sociological perspective, health - Business and standard of living: Economical perspective, material prosperity - Natural and life quality: Ecological perspective, thriving in sync with nature. There are 4 areas to create value for nature and communities, 3 of them are not about gathering or having many goods or much money. How are we going to change the paradigm of money based perspectives on growth into a more broader concept that includes themes that really matter? How do we take care of needs while preventing celebrating greed? The second speaker Jan Rotmans presented us with the transitions we currently cope with and more that we will need to face in the future. Transitions that UAS VHL already addresses in their various programmes. He had some advice for us to go beyond where we are today. Nice challenges to introduce in our new curricula.
