It’s that time of year! Young people are gathering or have already gathered their supplies for the new school year. Some are excited about going back to school. Others may deal with the nerves and anxiety of returning. Either way, educators across the country are doing all it takes to create a welcoming environment for their students. As school leaders, you’re thinking about your young people and your educators. You might be considering how to create a space where educators feel seen, heard, and valued so they can create a similar environment for their students. The beauty and the burden of school leadership is that you set the ripe conditions for young and adult learners to thrive. Given the great responsibility of school leadership, I'm excited to share preliminary data we have about how improving the student experience can have a positive impact on your school and lead to extraordinary and equitable experiences and outcomes for your students. I hope you find this data useful and gain some insight into the next steps you can take at your campus to reimagine the student experience. Cheers to a joyful, adventurous, and meaningful school year! https://lnkd.in/gEathY3X

Student test scores are falling, and absenteeism is breaking records, yet parents appear to believe that everything is on-track. Why? Our new report with Learning Heroes (US) and TNTP hints at a possible explanation: inflated grades. These false signals are giving families the impression that their children are performing just fine - when they are not. This latest report by Bett Global, released this week, shows the concerning trend of student behaviour in the classroom on the decline. Educators are investing more time, effort, and resources into teaching social-emotional learning and promoting student wellbeing than at any point in history. Then why isn't student behavior improving? The answer is addressing all the confounding factors that impact student behavior beyond the classroom. External factors are probably having a greater effect than what is taught in classrooms today.

Great insights into the need for an ecosystem of support in higher ed:
Adult learners --- synonymous with the term "stopping out," right? Suggests that maybe they can't handle it? Maybe we need to check our assumptions. Announcing a new research brief from CAEL on the real reasons why adult learners may have interruptions in their enrollment. When asked why they stopped out in the past, those surveyed said that the reasons were far more likely to be related to health, personal issues, money, or time constraints than academic reasons. Notably, many adult learners viewed stopping out as “taking a break” rather than dropping out completely. The bigger point is this: adult learners engage in higher education differently. Because their lives are so different from that of a 4-year residential college student, these up-and-down enrollment patterns may be a feature rather than a bug. So, consider ways to provide more flexible programs, support services, financial relief, easier reenrollment pathways -- also, eliminate penalties for part-time students that are baked into our financial aid systems! And recognize that success sometimes requires taking an occasional break when life gets in the way. Higher standards require us to stop using traditional grading practices. It’s simply dishonest and unfair to include a student’s behavior in a grade–to allow a student with weak understanding to get a higher, inflated grade. Awarding “participation” points (for contributing to discussions and being prepared for class) or giving students points for submitting HW (regardless of who does it or what help they got) allows students to avoid actual learning. We must hold students to higher standards by more accurate and equitable grading. https://lnkd.in/gFtf_VQF
OPINION: As kids head back to school, parents should be asking if their kids are ready for grade-level work

HOMEWORK: A multi-state, student-level analysis of the effects of the four-day school week on student achievement and growth. The study provides evidence that the four-day school week can hinder student academic progress, urging stakeholders to weigh the trade-offs when considering such policies carefully. The implications are particularly relevant given the growing adoption of four-day school weeks in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing legislative debates. https://lnkd.in/gdgdcEDd
