The National Infrastructure Advisory Council has proposed a strategic virtual reserve of electric transformers to address rising shortages and growing energy demand, particularly from data centers and AI infrastructure. As lead times for transformer procurement have doubled to 120 weeks, this initiative could stabilize the supply chain, ensuring the U.S. meets its electrification goals. #GridInfrastructure #ElectricTransformers #NIAC #EnergyDemand #DataCenters #Electrification Learn more about how the U.S. government could support critical grid components: https://lnkd.in/d-ZTajbR

NTP Study insight 4. By enabling resource sharing for #reliability and access to low-cost #low-emissions resources the benefits of #transmission can be in the hundreds of billions of dollars, as found by the National Transmission Planning (NTP) Study. Achieving those large benefits requires a massive expansion of the U.S. grid. By 2050, the transmission systems is doubled or tripled that of today’s system under the central decarbonization scenarios. Scenarios with the greatest expansion (and also the greatest economic benefits) are those that rely heavily on #HVDC technologies. Getting there requires an average annual growth in transmission that is multiple times the recent transmission growth rates (see figure). Since less transmission has been built every year over the past decade, this can feel daunting. However, the figure shows how the modeled growth rates are not much different (in TW-mile terms) than the transmission expansion for a few individual projects in several countries with more robust transmission expansion. It might take just a few major projects to start achieving the huge economic benefits estimated by the NTP Study. The DOE report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gNtd5N5f Thanks to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Grid Deployment Office for sponsoring this visionary study.

We are working with UK Power Networks (UKPN) the UK’s largest electricity distributor, and PowerRunner, a leading provider of grid analytics software. The PowerRunner on AVEVA’s PI System integrates operational data (OT) from 2M+ SCADA points and more then 8.3M smart meters, combined with other contextual IT data, to create granular temporal and spatial analytics across the low-voltage network. These analytics provide UKPN with historical, real-time and future views of low-voltage network data - from the meter to the substation - thereby providing UKPN with situational awareness across the low-voltage network and supporting their transition to an independent Distribution System Operator (DSO). Paramount to the DSO transition, UKPN must safely, reliably, and equitably orchestrate the integration and operation of distributed energy resources (DERs) and other flexible grid assets across the low-voltage network. The analytics and situational awareness provided by PowerRunner on AVEVA PI System supports UKPN with the actionable information needed to ensure the fidelity of the low-voltage grid, while enabling decarbonization. James Allison, from UK Power Networks, "In our transition to a DSO, selecting a technology platform capable of managing our substantial data requirements while offering configurable analytics was crucial, we selected the PowerRunner on AVEVA PI System, the only proven solution scalable to meet our requirements." Here’s how Transelec S.A. is able to make more informed decisions about transformer replacements, saving them both time and money. Transelec is the leading power transmission company in Chile, lighting up 98 % of the homes in Northern and Central Chile. With more than 10,000 kilometres of transmission lines, 69 substations and around 170 transformers across the country, they are a crucial part of the country’s power infrastructure. Historically, Transelec S.A. has replaced their transformers every forty years — which is the average lifespan informed by the supplier. Since transformers are the most expensive assets for transmission companies like Transelec, they are always looking for ways to extend the actual lifetime of the assets without increasing the risk of failures. For that same reason, last year, they were looking for new digital solutions to enhance their data usage and support them in the inspection and daily operations of their assets. We’re very happy to have been able to work with Tomás Riddell and the rest of his team at Transelec S.A. on a pilot project, discovering how digital transformer monitoring creates value to them: ➕ By making decision-making more data-driven less biased ➕ By optimising budget spending on replacing the assets ➕ By creating remote access to data through the digital health index, reducing the need for frequent on-site visits Read more about our work with Transelec through the link in the comments section ⬇️
