Sustainability claims and legislation around what those claims can and cannot include is a topic I love to follow. I just saw an article explaining that several fashion brands have recently pledged to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to make significant strides toward transparency in environmental claims. This action against "greenwashing" underscores the importance of accurate, clear information about the sustainability of products. For too long now, the complexity of Restricted Substances Lists (RSLs) and the lack of transparency around the chemical makeup of products have hindered true understanding of environmental impacts. A true commitment to sustainability means not just re-evaluating current practices but innovating with future products in mind, ensuring that the entire lifecycle of a product is designed with environmental stewardship at its core. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, the demand for genuine sustainability grows. This move by major retailers is a positive step towards meeting these expectations and fostering a competitive environment that values ecological integrity. #sustainabilityclaims #chemicaltransparency

The EU Supply Chain Act has been approved by the European Parliament. While details in the "how to" still needs clarification and this act still needs to be made national law for its member countries, the act is a clear step to provide more transparency along the supply chain, enhancing ESG-aspects in doing business and - in combination with the EU's Digital Product Passport (DPP) - demasking 'greenwashing' / 'greenwishing' - not only in the textile industry. The EU's Green Deal, which aims to promote sustainable growth and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, has reached a significant milestone. On December 14th, 2023, the European Parliament and Member States agreed on the EU Supply Chain Act, which aims to ensure that companies contribute to sustainable development, respect human rights, and protect the environment throughout their supply chains. National parliaments must now ratify it into national law. A complementary initiative proposed by the European Commission under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is the Digital Product Passport (DPP). The DPP, in its early stages of development, serves as a comprehensive digital twin of a product, providing consumers with vital information about its lifecycle, supply chain, and social and environmental impacts. Both the DPP and the EU Supply Chain Act align with the EU's broader goals of promoting sustainability and accountability in product manufacturing and supply chains. The DPP is anticipated to become mandatory for all products sold in the EU, with batteries being the first category required to comply in 2026, followed by apparel and consumer electronics. The DPP will have a global impact reshaping global value chains and driving transparency, traceability, and consistency. The GoodFashion Institute (GFI) welcomes both the EU Supply Chain Act and the DPP. Susanne Otto-Bomio, Director at GFI, emphasizes the importance of facilitating the implementation and market uptake of the DPP. She suggests that consumers would benefit from a trusted label or "GoodFashion Score" to better understand the sustainable impact of products. The GFI is exploring partnerships with notable bodies such as the EU Ecolabel. 🚨 Breaking News🚨 Yesterday EU Parliament has given its final green light to a directive that will improve product labeling and ban the use of misleading environmental claims. Businesses can no longer market their products with not verify claims about their environmental impact and durability. This new directive aims to strengthen product labeling against misinformation and greenwashing. Key Highlights: 🚫 No more misleading environmental claims! Terms like "eco-friendly", "biodegradable", "natural," "climate-neutral”, now require solid proof. 🏷️ Strict regulation of sustainability labels ensures clarity and trustworthiness. In the EU, only sustainability labels based on approved certification systems or established by public authorities will be allowed. ♻️ A big win for transparency: the directive emphasizes product durability and introduces new labeling for extended guarantees. Warranty information must be more visible, with a new extension label to highlight the longevity of goods. Fashion is at a crossroads – brands can either choose to continue with a business-as-usual mindset or embrace and transform their models for a better future. While many may choose to continue with the status quo, legislation is coming, with Europe leading the way. Yesterday, MEPs European Parliament adopted a new law banning greenwashing and misleading product information, with a focus on product durability. This follows the European Council's direction towards corporate sustainability due diligence directive, which aims to enhance the protection of the environment and human rights, as well as the European Commission's new regulations on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles. The EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles also presents a new approach, to implement commitments made under the European Green Deal, the new Circular Economy Action Plan and the Industrial Strategy, aims to create a greener, more competitive and resilient sector. Thriving in a sustainable future means that brands must navigate this changing terrain and take into account these legislations in forecasting and future business strategies. Perhaps poignantly, scrutiny will not only come from governments and regulators, but also stakeholders, consumers and competitor brands, as we collectively move from climate targets to climate transitional plans.
