This week, Phi Kappa Psi collaborated with the Hunters Fund, a foundation dedicated to supporting the interests of young people and raising awareness to end distracted/impaired driving. We thank all participants and supporters for their contributions to our cause. Throughout this week, we have successfully raised $7,860 and signed 1,616 pledge cards. Our campaign officially ends on December 31st. Donations help our cause a lot; every donation goes back to Hunters Fund, an impeccable organization that eliminates this everyday habit. 2. Sign a pledge card. The cards include your name and the words, “I will end distracted and impaired driving.” The more pledges we get signed, the better for all of us! The more pledge cards we get signed physically or electronically, the more we will reduce distracted driving deaths.

Heart on Main Street is raising money to help retailers impacted by recent storms throughout the US. In the last two weeks, deadly tornados have affected entire communities and destroyed locally-owned businesses in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa and Texas. This year alone, already hundreds of locally-owned independent retail stores have become victims of natural disasters. These unexpected disasters have affected retailers in every part of the country. While businesses are insured, there is often a gap between the cost of recovery and what they are paid out. This leaves retailers on the hook for thousands of dollars if they want to re-open their store and remain a part of the community. Independent retailers are huge drivers of the local economy and helping these retailers recover brings hope back to these affected communities. They bring a sense of normalcy to areas that have lost so much. Say, for example, that a donor had a pot P to donate annually to eight similar charities. She could measure their performance based on x interventions costing y annually (the formula is more complicated, this is a simple example). By applying Markovitz Theory of Portfolio Selection she could allocate P among the eight charities according to the Markowitz calculated coefficients efficiently in order to maximize her personal charitable giving utility. The risk-return element is part of the formula. Am I on to something or barking up the wrong endangered tree forest? Answers welcome on an e-postcard.
