Straight forward approach
I help PhDs, Postdocs & Lecturers secure academic jobs and thrive | Proven frameworks & insider knowledge tips to succeed | Get the academic roadmap I wish I had | Academic Career Mentor | Professor & Research Director
There is a definite right way of approaching a Prof to get a response. Here is my 5-step process on how to email a Professor: 1️⃣ Subject Field - The gateway to your email. Why: Most professors are swamped with emails. A clear, concise subject grabs attention. How: Be specific yet brief. Example: “Research Opportunity for joint publication on...” 2️⃣ Purpose - Clarity is key. Why: Professors appreciate brevity and directness. How: State your request upfront. No beating around the bush. Example: “I am writing to seek your advice on...” 3️⃣ Build Connection - Don’t be a stranger. Why: A personal touch can set you apart. How: Mention a mutual interest or a recent publication of theirs you found insightful. Example: “I was inspired by your recent work on…” 4️⃣ Introduction - Who are you? Why: Helps put a face to the name. How: Briefly introduce yourself and your interests. Example: “As an aspiring researcher in XYZ, I…” 5️⃣ Call-to-action - What next? Why: End with a clear action point. How: Propose a meeting, or ask for specific advice. Example: “Could we possibly discuss this over a call?” The difference between a response and silence can often lie in the approach. Start applying these steps today and see the difference for yourself. #researcher #phd #professor #academia 🔄 repost to help a friend :) -------------------- If you enjoyed this, then you'd love my exclusive weekly newsletter that teaches you how to secure a tenure-tack job and navigate academia as an early career researcher: https://lnkd.in/eNAjgrY9

Grateful to share our article just published in the Journal of Career Development on Cognitive Information Processing theory in which cross-disciplinary science is examined concerning theoretical concepts. Take a look! #CIPcareer #careerdevelopment

Curious about Cognitive Information Processing theory? Our manuscript, “Reaching Further Into a Theory of Career Problem-Solving and Decision-Making,” with co-authors Gary Peterson, Emily Bullock-Yowell and Seth Hayden, was just published in the Online First version of the Journal of Career Development. We summarize developments with CIP theory over the past 30 years and cast a vision for what's next. https://lnkd.in/eGFebu54

Career advice is hard right? Our dreams as children are often brought back to reality and we find ourselves in “realistic careers.” This is especially true in STEM careers. It is so easy to speak to someone in STEM, learn about what they do and say “I wish I knew that was a career.” In my latest blog article I discuss the disconnect in STEM between public engagement and its impact on those seeking career advice. https://lnkd.in/er4JMBhy #STEM #ENU #EdinburghNapierUniversity #OfFelautumn #Careers

It’s finally there: at 34-years old, I have my first permanent contract. The prolonged education, the long periods of job insecurity, and the sometimes even longer working hours. This all has led to many conversations with friends, family, neighbors, and strangers where surprise about the academic job market was all but too common. The overall sentiment was that I must love what I was doing. That’s true. For sure. Even though academics tend to complain about a lot of work-related stuff - and sometimes rightly so - most of us love what we are allowed to do. And that I now have some more certainty that I can keep on doing so as an assistant professor, feels fantastic. Joining the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) has been a breath of fresh air. I feel part of a supportive environment, certainly in the Persuasive Communication Group. A place where I have the feeling that long working hours are not idolized or seen as a KPI. I’m now part of a community, even though I don’t live close by. A group of teachers and researchers that shows their appreciation to one another. So, that’s what it will be for the coming years. After getting married in Helmond and now landing a job in Amsterdam, I have probably fallen off the shortlist for Eindhoven’s next mayor. Oh well, there’s no need to switch jobs now.
