The way we move contributes to almost a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions. Over the last twenty years, India has experienced a surge in mobility and transportation related emissions, with GHG emissions increasing 224% between 2000 and 2019 [International Energy Agency (IEA)]. Cities, which are rapidly growing, have felt the brunt of this mobility shift, with many cities experiencing unbearable congestion, poor public transportation provision, and rising air pollution. India is at a pivotal moment to shape the future of transport emissions, especially given that only 30% of urban residents rely on private vehicles.(Indian Institute for Human Settlements) Our upcoming dialogue, on Friday, October 4th, will explore approaches to transition to low carbon urban mobility. Is electric vehicle penetration truly advancing India's Green Mobility Dream? The answer hinges on understanding India's reasons for adopting electric vehicles, which can be summarized into two pivotal objectives: 1. To diminish the carbon footprint and alleviate the burden of housing some of the world's most polluted cities. Changing climate conditions has pushed temperature beyond 52 in some parts of India 2. To curtail the import bill, with oil accounting for approximately 30% of the country's total imports. The first objective not only holds critical socio-economic and public health implications but is also essential for India to attain developed nation status and assume a prominent global leadership role. This vision was underscored by the honorable Prime Minister's commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070. However, recent headlines, such as "India's coal-based power demand rises by 7.3%, at all-time high: Govt" and "Coal stock at thermal power plants grows 32% to 45 MT," cast doubt on whether India is indeed progressing in the right direction. These trends indicate a persistent reliance on fossil-based power generation rather than transitioning to greener and renewable energy sources. Presently, only 20% of India's total power generation is derived from renewable sources. To truly fulfill the potential of electric vehicles in greening India's transportation sector, this figure must be substantially increased to at least 50% in the near future. Only then can electric vehicles genuinely contribute to India's environmental goals and be considered truly green. #Climatechange #electricvehicles #Carbonfootprint #Futuremobility

I was recently asked how industrial growth and environmental conservation can align in a developing nation like India. Here's my perspective: India, as a developing country, holds immense potential for growth. Transitioning from the 10th to the 5th largest economy and heading towards becoming the 3rd largest economy is a testament to this potential. However, amidst the visible development, one may ponder at what expense does this progress come? Contrary to some media portrayals, the situation isn't as dire as it's often depicted. There are indeed efforts being made to mitigate environmental impacts. The government has embarked on various initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions, with a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2070. Here are some noteworthy initiatives India has taken on a global scale: 1. Mission LIFE 2. International Solar Alliance 3. Coalition for Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure 4. Green Credit Initiative 5. Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge Additionally, there are several national-level policies in place: 1. Fuel blending 2. Airspace restructuring for more efficient flight paths 3. National Hydrogen Mission 4. National Action Plan on Climate Change 5. Accelerated adoption of Bharat Stage VI norms for vehicle emissions 6. Promoting the adoption of electric vehicles 7. National policy for Rooftop Solar These initiatives and policies demonstrate India's commitment to balancing industrial growth with environmental sustainability. By implementing such measures, India aims to foster growth while minimizing its ecological footprint. #Industry #Environment #Sustainability #India #ClimateAction #CarbonNeutrality #RenewableEnergy
