I am always honored when asked to participate and or speak in DC. I am very patriotic and love been a citizen of the United States and take my citizenship as a responsibility and as a privilege. I always feel unworthy and a little bit of the imposter syndrome. I just keep saying to myself, I may not be the best person but I keep showing up and thats galf the battle. I show up so my ethnic community has visibility, has a voice and has some advocacy in DC. I invite Pacific Islanders to join me in DC, we need more people involved.
May 13 I will be on a panel that will address that the Biden-Harris Administration is redoubling its efforts to support Black, Latino, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian, Native American, women, and veteran small business owners. From international matchmaking and business counseling, to direct funding for communities across the United States -- there is exciting work underway to help support new and existing AA & NH/PI entrepreneurs. For instance, in Fiscal Year 2023, the U.S. Small Business Administration delivered $52.4 billion in capital, disaster relief, and bonding to small businesses and disaster-impacted communities across America, with expanded funding for minority- and women-owned businesses. Over the past year, the U.S. Department of Commerce has expanded offices and staffing in the Indo-Pacific, which has already helped U.S. AA & NH/PI companies expand sales and build commercial partnerships. Three million businesses are owned by AA & NH/PIs employing five million people with annual revenues of more than $1 trillion. This panel will explore opportunities and challenges for AA & NH/PI small businesses, despite record levels of funding, support, and services.
It was moved to Walter E. Washington Convention Center because VP Kamala Harris will be attending.
What Makes a Great Board Member?
By Diane Cross, Fraser President & CEO
I have had the privilege of serving on numerous boards throughout my career including the 35 years as CEO reporting to Fraser’s Operating Board. Over the years, I have learned what truly makes a board member great.
In my experience, individuals who have direct lived experience with your organization’s mission, products, or services are always the best contributors! Personal experience brings with it an unrivaled passion for success. To these board members, what you do really matters.
Great board members must also have professional skills and competencies, with expertise in human resources, IT, finance, marketing, etc. Specific operational knowledge of the industry also adds value. These broad skills are essential for balancing board perspectives.
Individuals who see themselves as good stewards and partners of the CEO are also critical. Although you don’t want a “rubber stamp” board that always says “yes”, you cannot afford to have board members who are toxic. The role of a CEO is challenging enough without having board members who do not conduct themselves in a professional and caring manner. The staff in an organization feel this tension when it occurs, and it definitely affects morale.
Finally, board members who represent diversity in its broadest definition will add value to decision-making. Robust discussions with differing points of view are necessary for boards to fully vet ideas and improve the organization.
I belong to an organization called WBL (Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation). If you are looking for great board talent, go to their website at www.wbl.org!

Join us on 5th December with Kate Eades and our magnificent panel, Tebogo Brenda Albert, Alessandro Galtieri, and Brian Chadwick to reflect on another Year of Transformation in the Legal Industry . #KPMGLaw
As we near the close of 2024, it’s a moment to pause and reflect on the seismic shifts we've witnessed. Come for a festive breakfast and connect with other GC / inhouse colleagues on how you have managed 2024. From the continued ripples of global geopolitics to local reckonings, the challenges and opportunities for the legal profession have never been sharper.
👉 This year has reminded us of our interconnectedness but also how political discourse can expose division. Geopolitical tensions, sanctions and elections continue to complicate supply chains and brand values forcing legal teams to navigate an ever-changing landscape of compliance, reputational and risk management. Meanwhile, the Post Office Scandal inquiry has been a sobering reminder of the role accountability, ethics, morality, integrity and how GCs are pivotal in ensuring transparency, building trust and speaking truth to power.
👉 How will GCs operate in 2025 when press scrutiny continues to focus on their role, duties and failures (over and above the role of CEO, Chair and other senior leaders in corporate scandal).
👉 The rapid evolution of AI has also been a defining theme. Beyond efficiency gains, it has sparked urgent debates around ethics, bias, and the future of work, what role does the GC play in the balance of human judgment and technological capability?
👉 Wellbeing remains another constant thread. With burnout still a pressing issue, who is "winning" in supporting teams and fostering a culture of sustainable performance? For legal professionals, who often shoulder the weight of complex decisions, this has been a year of recognising the importance of balance and resilience.
As we reflect on these changes, we should be discussing which direction the role of legal professionals is evolving. Beyond technical expertise, GCs remain critical advisors on strategic, moral, and societal questions. Some in business may prefer to "narrow" their remit, shove them into swim lanes or lock them out of critical debates. Do you agree? These are complex dynamics, you're invited to join the debate.
👇 What key changes have you noticed this year, and how are they shaping your view of the legal profession in 2025 and beyond? Let’s start the conversation. Register below: https://lnkd.in/eeD3c5ze#LegalIndustry#AIandEthics#Wellbeing#Geopolitics#LeadershipJodi Bartle

Teka Miller-Alston, Robert Broome, CAE and I were privileged to spend the day with Kelli Roberts and Julie Williams with CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen) discussing the pipeline and CLA's efforts with their pilot Academy in conjunction with the Hispanic Leage of Winston-Salem and Forsyth Technical Community College. My takeaways from our incredible conversation:
- There are no quick fixes. Taking something from concept to application involving so many individuals from around the country takes time, perseverance and agility if you want to create something sustainable.
- Show up and plan to stay! Yes, we need to plant routes, we can't fix a people problem like we're sourcing raw materials for a widget. We need to show up, invest and plant roots in the community. Those roots will grow into the beautiful garden like CLA is growing.
- Lead with love! Jen Leary shared the sentiment with me back in May when she spoke about this pilot program. Listening to the dedication and compassion of the CLA family to identify, develop and support their first cohort is inspiring on so many levels. We heard countless stories of the CLA family willingly sharing extra time to help others reach for dreams never thought possible.
We talk about how the profession gets a bad rap and that we need to change the narrative. We need to focus on the heart of this profession. CPAs, and especially the CPAs at CLA, have incredible hearts for their teams, their clients and especially their communities. Sharing stories of how one firm, in a pilot phase, changed the lives of 11 individuals and is creating a model to ramp up talent development locally is a testament to what WE can do and North Carolina Association of CPAs (NCACPA) is here for it! #leadership#CPAs#NCACPA#TEAM#CEOonthego
We know no boundaries as our service area spans much larger than the Triangle footprint. It’s important for your chamber to have regional awareness so that you can better serve the membership base AND the community.
Participation in programs like this are crucial to gain awareness, build relationships, and spur innovation for what we can do together to improve our community.

While the Chair's integrity has to be beyond question, their ability to acquire the best Directors who are fit for the Board, the industry, the growth agenda and the company strategy are critical. Too many CEO's are just not getting the value they seek from the Board and this is where the work has to be done. Tick the box is one thing, delivering shareholder value is what it is about.
