Anyone who knows me knows one of my core values is meeting around a table and enjoying a nice meal. I had an excellent meal at www.freyadetroit.com last night, but the level of service they delivered was what really stood out. There was amazingly intricate attention to the detail and it got me thinking about the importance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and the impact they can have on quality of experience. Don't worry, I can sense the eye rolls. Here’s some food for thought: 🗃 Standardize and systemize. Elevate execution by reducing the amount of real-time processing required. Once my order was placed, cutlery was lined up for each course at the servery. Glassware was specific to whether I was drinking still or sparkling water. Food was always served from my left and the path to the table was pre-defined. To a certain extent, thinking had been taken out of the system. 📖 Develop a common lexicon and train on it. Staff used common language, adjectives, tones when describing dishes. Delivery had been practiced with repetition and was consistent. Eye contact was always made. I could also tell staff had a common language they used amongst themselves to direct activity. This allowed them to communicate what needed to be done without it being obvious to patrons and was quite impressive. 💲 Resource appropriately. Freya wouldn’t be able to operate with the service model they have if they were unwilling to staff it appropriately. They developed their service model and flow, ensuring there was resiliency in roles. It appeared like most of the staff in the dining room could perform any role required. How many times do we write procedures which don’t take into account resiliency or the amount of resource actually required? 👑 And finally, remember the procedure isn’t the holy grail; Customer impact is. SOPs should turn focus to the customer and drive genuine customer experience. In this case, so many small details elevated the experience but it never felt forced. From having the exact number of chairs at each table according to the reservation or having one server per person at the table ratio to deliver dishes, being able to scale and focus to wow the customer need was paramount. Everything felt genuine and personalized, but it was evident that systems were the key enabler. In closing, my mind turns to what ifs…. What if we could apply this approach in cybersecurity? What if we could take more complexity out of systems? What if we loathed creating and refining Standard Operating Procedures just a little bit less? #foodforthought #cybersecurity #policiesandprocedures #otsecurity #standardoperatingprocedures
