Looking forward to joining the forthcoming IBTTA global tolling summit. With many toll concessions coming to their conclusion in the next years, it is important to discuss how to manage those transitions. I welcomed the invitation to moderate this session. This is not only relevant for the current generation of tolling concessions which developed important links in our motorway network across parts of Europe, but also to better inform our arrangements for the ongoing task to develop our networks. #VisionZero #DublinDeclaration #FutureProofNetworks #SDG17

During my panel discussion organised by Kongsberg Maritime was asked how different stakeholders can work together. My answer is simple, “join GCMD”. From my perspective, there are 3Ps which are key in this decarbonisation journey: People, Partnerships and Pilots. A diverse group of stakeholders can bring about different values and perspectives to the table. 1. People: a team comprising of people with diverse expertise and experience helps us to understand and contextualise issues which we may not be aware of, or solutions within and outside of shipping which can be adapted to address some of these challenges 2. Partnerships: as a small organisation, we rely on our centre-level and project partners to support us in our efforts. Assets and knowledge which are easily accessible by one may not be so by another. These contributions increases the chances of project success and helps us addresses potential roadblocks which we may not be aware 3. Pilots: Given the practicalities of the industry, I don’t think a perfect pilot that addresses all issues exists. What we can do is to start somewhere, and take on a learn-as-we-do approach while aiming for perfection as the end goal. For example, we are looking at using ammonia ship-to-ship cargo transfer pilots within port limits to understand ammonia bunkering not because STS have not been done, but because this allows us to reduce some unknowns while we think deeper about the other considerations such as emergency response procedures, crew competencies and questions that needs to be addressed beyond a once-off pilot. The race is not against each other in who grabs the most headlines, but rather against time to meet our decarbonisation targets. Doing something today is likely better than waiting for answers tomorrow, and I believe a combination of the 3Ps can help us move ahead towards our decarbonisation goals.

I recall a presentation given by Nicolaus Radford at a Bots & Brews event at the Ion Houston in which he stated," 'Earth' is an inaccurate name for our planet considering over 70% of the planet is covered in water." With 80% of international trade in goods being carried by sea, it would be an understatement to say maritime infrastructure is important. According to the "Review of Maritime Transport 2021" published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), there is a direct inverse relationship between the quality of maritime infrastructure and the cost of maritime transport. It is in our civilization's interest to invest in this vital infrastructure. Arguably one of the most important commodities shipped via maritime routes are Energy products. Without these- manufacturers stop production. Militaries and Civil emergency forces would cease to be operational. Coffee would never be in inventory at local store or café.
