The Kostyonki–Borshchyovo archaeological complex is an area where numerous Upper Paleolithic archaeological sites have been found, located around the villages of Kostyonki (also Kostenki) and Borshchyovo (also Borshchevo). The area is found on the western (right) bank of the Don River in Khokholsky District, Voronezh Oblast, Russia, some 25 km south of the city of Voronezh.[1] The 26 Paleolithic sites of the area are numbered Kostenki 1–21 and Borshchevo 1–5. It is known for its high concentration of cultural remains of anatomically modern humans from the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic era, before 40,000 years ago.[2][3] Finds are on exhibit in situ, at the State Archaeological Museum–Reserve Kostyonki built atop the mammoth bone circle Kostenki 11.[4][5] Kostyonki is considered as belonging to the Aurignacian culture.

PATARA ROAD MONUMENT: It would not be an exaggeration to say that Stadiasmus Patarensis (Patara Road Monument), which emerged after a forest fire in Patara in 1993, is one of the inventions of the century. Thanks to this monument, which is preserved in the warehouse of the Antalya Archaeological Museum, an unknown ancient city was identified in the Lycian region. Among these, there are settlements that have been found before, but whose names have not been determined. Thanks to this monument, we now know the Lycian region and our geography more clearly. The cities, towns and villages of the entire Lycian road network, as well as their distances, are located on the three faces of this giant monument, which was deciphered by the Mediterranean Language and Cultures Research Center within the body of Akdeniz University. In addition to the Lycian highway network, it is possible to research the settlement history of the region and examine its economic and social relations, since nearly a hundred settlements are mentioned in the monument. The inscription, which reveals that Beydağları was called 'Masikytos', Akdağlar 'Kragos', and Boncuk Mountains 'Antikragos' in ancient times, has a significance that will radically change the historical geography of Lycia. I am happy to announce the publication of our latest article, titled "The Fortified Site at Lanaken near Maastricht (Belgium/the Netherlands): New Insights on Early Medieval Military and Elite Strategies in the Middle Meuse Valley", now available for early access at Early Medieval Europe! Authored by Wim De Clercq, Elke Wesemael, and myself, this article describes the archaeological evidence concerning an early medieval fortified site in Lanaken, near Maastricht, excavated in 2017 by ARON bvba. While only a portion of the site could be excavated, it became evident that it featured a significant defensive system. Radiocarbon dating places the construction and initial utilization of the fortified site around 650-750/800 CE. Although a complete understanding of the site remains elusive, our study yields several new insights, that add to our understanding of Early Medieval society in the northern regions of Francia: 👉 The site represents the earliest known construction of a fortified site in the lowlands of northern Francia, showing that the construction of newly-built defensive structures in this area began much earlier than previously thought. 👉 The defensive layout closely mirrors Roman military practices, evidenced by the utilization of Roman measurement units in the planning of defensive works. This underscores the survival, adaptation and application of Roman military techniques into the 7th-8th centuries and beyond. 👉 Situated adjacent to a secondary road leading to Maastricht, the site likely served as a strategic point for controlling traffic en route to Maastricht and its vital Meuse crossing. Together, this suggests the possibility of a broader network of 'checkpoints' regulating the roadways around Maastricht. In March, Flemish Minister of Immovable Heritage Matthias Diependaele designated the site as a 'protected archaeological site,' ensuring the preservation of its heritage values for future generations. Scientists of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine sound the alarm: tons of concrete were piled on authentic archaeological remains during the construction of a new theater. "We have not won yet, but they have already lost": Akhtem Seitablayev shared his thoughts on the war in Ukraine Details Chersonesos Tavria is one of the oldest cities on the territory of Ukraine, founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. The monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and is an extremely valuable source of information about ancient civilization. After the occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, Ukrainian scientists were actually banned from conducting research on the territory of Chersonesos. The occupiers actively use the monument for their propaganda purposes, falsifying history and assigning the cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people. Russia uses cultural monuments as an ideological weapon. Changing the mental significance of cultural heritage and broadcasting hostile narratives translates into the substitution of the monument. This can be observed at heritage sites in Crimea. Call for Papers: ARCHAEOLOGIES AND HERITAGIZATIONS OF HISTORIC AND CONTEMPORARY VIOLENCE 30th EAA Annual Meeting in Rome, Italy  28 - 31 August 2024 In the aftermath of violence, the identification, excavation, and analysis of sites at which such acts were carried out can be key to ensuring justice and a sense of closure for the families of those who perished. Once located, the process of excavation can evoke strong reactions and at times polemical debate. These places, be they concentration camps, sites of massacre, or incarceration, can become iconic sites of commemoration and often accrue memorials or become 'sacralized' sites of memory. However, many recent conflicts are not waged by opposing militaries, but rather by paramilitary or guerilla combatants, or by state actors against their own populations. During conflicts, alliances between various groups may shift. A consensus on who to commemorate is not always forthcoming. Competitive commemoration, desecration, or willful neglect may immediately follow a conflict. In turn, the sites of 'pain' of the ‘Other’ may be ‘orphaned’ on the ‘wrong’ side of a border or the ‘fault line of memory’. What new discursive spaces do these sites open? Can one ensure that their heritagization acknowledges their respective historical and political specificities without reify divides? What can be learned from non-state sanctioned ‘grassroots’ activities at these sites (without romanticizing them)? Can such sites contribute to sustainable peace? The discovery of older historic sites of violence often result in headline grabbing articles. Does the heritagization of historic sites of violence necessarily entail voyeurism and ‘dark tourism’, or does it contribute to a valid exploration of violence? Can historic sites of violence be understood through the same lenses as their more contemporary counterparts? How and why does their excavation and heritagization differ from those encountered for more recent examples? Large Roman pool and other buildings discovered in Vibo Valentia Recent archaeological excavations at the Urban Archaeological Park in Vibo Valentia have unveiled significant remnants of Roman civilization. The discoveries were part of seismic retrofitting works at the “P.E. Murmura” school and revealed an array of ancient structures and artifacts. Originally established as the Greek colony Hipponion in the 7th century BCE, Vibo Valentia was annexed by the Roman Republic in 194 BCE and renamed. The recent excavations have uncovered structures dating from the Late Republican Age (2nd-1st centuries BCE) to the Imperial Age (2nd-3rd centuries CE). The most striking findings include the remains of a Roman domus (private dwelling), a thermal complex, and a large ornamental pool, possibly a natatio, lined with colorful marble...
