We just extended this #callforpapers for a special issue on Safety, Reliability, & Trustworthiness of Intelligent Transportation System! Guest Editors Ci LIANG and Martin Törngren are seeking submissions for this special issue of the SAE International Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles. Relevant topics include (but are not limited to): • Functional safety of intelligent transportation systems • Reliability and trustworthiness of AI-based systems • Scenario/model based verification and validation • Risk assessment of scenario-based virtual testing • Safety, security and performance issues of the coordination between automated vehicles and smart infrastructures • Understanding of human driver behaviors and intentions Currently, the annual increase in population, urbanization, industrialization, and the necessity of smart infrastructures for smart cities pose a strong need for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The integration of ITS serves as a key solution to the main challenges faced in our day-to-day life, and advanced techniques and technologies are gaining increased attention. A mix of ITS and regular transportation systems (RTS) in future traffic networks challenges the safety, reliability, and trustworthiness of ITS, as well as the holistic safety of traffic networks. Hence, it is crucial to understand the risks of such mixed traffic networks where ITS and RTS are both involved, with mutual interactions. With this in mind, there are many important issues that need to be investigated to facilitate ITS in performing tasks safely and properly, and to assure the safety of traffic networks. 🚀 I am thrilled to announce the recent publication of our paper entitled "Optimizing Energy-Efficient Braking Trajectories with Anticipatory Road Data for Automated Vehicles" 🚗 in the 2024 European Control Conference (ECC24). 📜 In our paper, we introduce a method that leverages anticipatory road data, such as road slopes or upcoming speed limits, to plan energy-efficient braking trajectories utilizing coasting strategies. Enabling Data-Driven Operations with Advanced Sensor-Based Analytics - Business Development Manager, SMATS Traffic Solutions
I had a great time at the GTHA ITS Summit this week, engaging with interesting professionals in the Intelligent Transportation Systems space. The summit was a hub of learning, packed with new technologies and forward-thinking initiatives. Through thought-provoking panels and dynamic networking sessions with government officials, private sector practitioners, and technology experts, we delved into how emerging technologies can enhance urban mobility and safety. These interactions and discussions opened new avenues for reshaping our sector with innovative approaches. It was great to contribute to a panel session on how ITS can contribute to Vision Zero initiatives. I particularly elaborated on how connected car probe data analytics can facilitate network-wide speed screening and identify vulnerable road user (VRU) near miss hotspots. This data is crucial for the strategic deployment of traffic calming measures, targeted placement of hardware, before & after studies of counter measure effectiveness, and prioritizing areas for traffic speed enforcement cameras, which ultimately fosters substantial improvements in road safety.
