🏗️Every marvel of modern infrastructure stands testament to the relentless hard work of earthmoving machinery and their operators. However, the road to completion is riddled with hurdles and challenges. Problematic Terrain: Navigating through uneven, muddy, and unstable terrains is a daily struggle that can delay projects and put machines to the ultimate test. How do you ensure that your machines conquer every terrain with minimal wear and tear? Equipment Utilization: Inefficient utilization leads to excess wear and tear on some machines vs. others. Without digital usage data, it's hard for managers to manage their fleets efficiently. How do you collect fleet data real-time to make the best decisions? Operator Shortages: Finding skilled experience operators is hard. It gets harder when your worksite is in a remote area. Hiring less experienced candidates leads to more accidents. How do you fill labor shortages to manage tight timelines and budgets? 👋 Hi, I'm Devin Blitzer. I'm a 4x serial entrepreneur who has managed $25M+ of heavy equipment across the US. I've experienced firsthand the pain of severe labor shortages and life-threatening accidents. Since then I've made it my mission to help construction projects become wildly successful by solving labor shortages and safety issues through technology. +Follow me here for practical advice and frameworks on how to solve construction labor and safety challenges. If you learned something useful from this post, be sure to give it a like and repost it to share it with your fellow construction managers! https://bit.ly/heavy-guide

EDIT: I’m not retiring and I’m not leaving Caltrans. Today marks a big career milestone for me. It was 25 years ago that I started working for Caltrans. I was hired as a transportation engineer for Caltrans District 3/North Region Design. I had just graduated from Sacramento State with my civil engineering degree the previous December and had passed the initial online application process they had in place back then for transportation engineers. I'd put in for several openings, including one in Marysville and one in Sacramento. I interviewed for both and was later offered both positions (both offers came in the same day). I didn't have a car, so I wound up taking the position in Sacramento. I remember a few days later getting a phone call from the man who would be my first supervisor, thinking he was asking me to come interview, and telling him that I had already accepted an offer. I was mortified to learn that it was actually my new boss calling me to welcome me to his design branch. That first job was an interesting one. Our branch was split into two groups. A number of the squad members were working on a major rehabilitation job on I-80 east of Truckee. The rest of us were assigned to projects in District 1, mostly Lake County, although the very first project I was assigned to was in Mendocino County. I didn't do much actual design work. I was assigned to a project engineer whose first language was not English, and so they took advantage of my writing skills, and I wound up writing lots of reports and memos. Eventually I went out on rotation, where I had an opportunity to work in the Sacramento Freeway Operations Office under Carol Pearce, who I believe was one of the first female civil engineers to work for Caltrans. She had a tremendous influence on me (and probably many others) in terms of how to manage and address freeway operations. I had always wanted to work on the Traffic side of the department, and working with Carol was something I asked for as part of my rotation assignment. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. When my rotation ended, North Region Design management announced they were overstaffed and were looking for people who were willing to transfer to District 3 Traffic Operations. I jumped at the chance. That was in 2002, and ever since then, with only a couple of exceptions, I've been working in some area of Traffic Operations, both in the district and HQ. It's been a great ride, and it's gone by so very fast. I've met many wonderful people along the way. I always tell people that it is the people of Caltrans that have kept me with the organization. Yes, I've had my ups and downs careerwise, and I've learned some lessons along the way. But I've truly enjoyed it. Oh, and I still remember what I wore to the office that first day. Tan khakis, a blue button down shirt, and a blue tie with a gold pattern on it. The khakis and shirt are long gone, but I still have that tie.

PE Turned Financial Advisor. I help engineers: • Design financial plans • Pay less tax • Build more diversified portfolios
Very interesting insight here from Tyler Wiggins about the current job market for software engineers vs structural engineers. There definitely seems to be quite the imbalance of labor supply/demand. Have others noticed this in their local market?
Former Engineering Manager turned Territory Sales Manager || BURNDY (a Hubbell company) || DM me CONNECT and let’s chat!
“Where did all the structural engineers go?” This turns out to be a complicated question to answer. Check out this job search I did for the Los Angeles Metro Area. I searched “Structural Engineer” (On-Site) I reviewed the first page of the search results: 124 openings, average of 9 applications/job To help with a comparison, if I look at “Software Engineer” in the same area, I get this: 932 openings, average of 78 applications/job Nine applications may seem like enough, but if you have ever posted a job on LinkedIn, you know that it’s not. 𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝? Not one thing in particular, but a combination of a few: 1) Many civil/structural engineers left the industry during the ‘08 recession. 2) There are now not enough mid to senior-level engineers to fill open roles from engineers retiring or company growth. 3) Many civil/structural engineers were overworked, overburdened with stress, and under-paid. This did not entice college students to pursue the degree. 4) Civil/structural engineers continue to leave the profession due to burnout. What does the solution to this problem look like? It’s holistic, and involves rethinking your recruiting process. Working with a recruiter who specializes in your niche (civil, structural, geotechnical, forensic, etc.) is a great place to start. They can give you some “boots on the ground” research into what is going on in your area. I recruit structural and forensic engineers for growing engineering firms. These are the problems that I address with my clients every week. Interested in talking through some solutions to grow your engineering team? Please DM me. P.S. - Would love to hear from engineering managers in the comments. How has hiring been for you over the past few years?
