Great news from Ghana! Ghana inaugurates Africa's largest floating solar photovoltaic (PV) project. A growing number of such systems exist in China, France, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Thailand, and the United States. Floating solar is a type of 'Offshore Solar' energy which also includes fixed-bottom foundations. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚? While many people think regulatory rules are the main problem, the real issue often comes from the delays in government departments when processing applications and issuing approvals. For example, Seriti Green faced a staggering two-and-a-half years to get permission to connect to the grid for a project aimed at creating new skills and jobs in a struggling community. Just imagine that—two-and-a-half years for a piece of paper that could change lives! This shows a big gap: some parts of the government understand and support the potential of renewable energy, but others seem unaware of the important opportunities it can bring. Also, the cost of renewable energy is often overestimated around the world. In reality, solar energy is becoming cheaper and more accessible. For a country to succeed with renewable energy, the government needs to have a clear vision that starts from the top. The first project is usually the hardest, but once it’s done, moving forward becomes much easier. Education about the benefits of renewable energy is crucial, not just for government officials but for communities as well. It’s time to create a better environment for renewable energy projects to succeed across Africa. #ThrowBackThursday #TBT Last week I spent an hour at my desk formulating points to address in a meeting with the EU Twinning Project team in Malawi. The team engaged us (the Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (REIAMA)) on our perspectives on the gaps and opportunities that could be identified in the energy sector to support and improve the capacities of the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) through institutional capacity building and other regulatory frameworks. This conversation also touched on the topic of off grid solutions and mini grid viability in Malawi.
