As part of this year’s #16DaysofActivism, we visited some of the organisations we fund to see what domestic abuse and violence against women and girls (VAWG) support they provide the local community. We spoke with Lucy Martin and Martha from Watford Women's Centre - a charity which provides holistic support services to women from all backgrounds, including those on low incomes, refugees, and migrants impacted by domestic abuse and sexual violence. In the last year, the ASRC's Human Rights Law Program (HRLP) has seen an increase in both volume and complexity of legal cases. This has been exacerbated by hostile and inaccessible systems, prolonged processing delays, rapid and severe legal changes and increasing hopelessness and despair in presenting clients. Many of our clients face intersectional barriers to access to justice, including homelessness, serious ill-health, experiences of trauma, experiences of severe family violence, and deprivation of access to work and healthcare. A staggering 57% of Tahirih clients experience abuse and exploitation AFTER coming to the U.S. It’s devastating that after making the brave and incredibly difficult decision to leave, migrants are at risk of experiencing unimaginable harm and violence in a country that should provide safety. My colleagues and I at the Tahirih Justice Center are dedicated to creating a world where everyone can live free from violence. But we can’t do this alone. That’s why I’m joining Tahirih Justice Center’s Light the Way Fund-a-Thon to raise critical funds to support women, girls, and all immigrant survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other forms of gender-based violence. Children, especially those living in the "crescent" areas closest to the frontlines and near the Russian border, remain exposed to severe risks caused by this war. On 15 October, my colleague, Joanna Jaworska, along with colleagues from ACAPS, UNICEF Ukraine, Charitable Foundation "ROKADA", and soschildren's villages, will be participating in a webinar and discussion on child protection issues in #Ukraine. For our part, we'll be speaking on a comprehensive assessment we conducted in the spring on perceptions of child protection risks in eastern and southern regions of the country in partnership with the Child Protection Area of Responsibility Group in Ukraine and UNICEF Ukraine. This event will be a good opportunity to learn more about the risks children face, but I think it will be particularly interesting as it will also bring together a range of stakeholders from local Ukrainian organizations, assessment and analysis organizations, and coordinating bodies to speak about these issues from different angles, ranging from the "on-the-ground", programmatic view to the higher level coordination perspective. More than 117 million people were forcibly displaced at the end of 2023 as a result of war, violence, human rights violations, or political, ethnic, gender or religious persecution, according to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Our team recently developed a new resource, “In Their Own Voices: A Manual for Inclusive, Victim-Centered Documentation and Memorialization of Forced Displacement,” to support civil society organizations, activists, survivors and others as they work to counter negative stereotypes about forcibly displaced people; establish clear and truthful records of the violations that they have faced; and work to hold perpetrators formally accountable. Wycombe Women's Aid is a member of Women's Aid Federation England (WAFE), the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. WAFE's latest public awareness campaign brings attention to the Ignored Emergency: -Domestic abuse is a national emergency, but is often not seen in this way -Many turn a blind eye to the danger faced by countless women and children -Domestic abuse needs to be recognised as a public emergency on a scale with fire and traffic accidents -Women are 50 times more likely to be injured by their partner than in a house fire -Women are twice as likely to die at the hands of their partner than from smoke and gas inhalation -Women are over three times more likely to be killed by a partner than by not wearing a seatbelt Domestic abuse poses a larger risk to the lives of women than house fires and car accidents. Domestic abuse is prevalent and it is deadly. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 9495, legislation that would grant the incoming president unprecedented power to target non-profits like ours. The purpose of this new bill is simply to suppress political dissent. Organizations like ours serve a critical role in U.S. society and in the international community as a vital watchdog for rights, and as a counterweight to anti-refugee rhetoric from political leaders. What is International Day for the Abolition of Slavery? The UN Day for the Abolition of Slavery is an annual observance that is threefold – eradicating modern and contemporary forms of slavery, raising awareness about human trafficking, and promoting the rights and dignity of all people. This day serves as a reminder and a call to action. 👉🏼 A reminder that modern slavery still exists in countries like Australia. 👉🏼 A call to action to do something to end the abuse, manipulation and exploitation of vulnerable people. When is it? The UN observes the Abolition of Slavery every year on 2 December. The focus of today is “on eradicating contemporary forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, the worst forms of child labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.” It provides an opportunity for governments, organisations, and businesses across the world to come together and decide that modern slavery should not exist. How to show your support this week? Participating in International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is a great way to show your support and raise your voice. There are many ways to get involved: 1. Educate Yourself. Pouring time and energy into learning more about the many forms modern slavery takes on is a great place to start. Our articles tab has years’ worth of blogs that are a great starting point. 2. Raise Awareness. Once you’ve set aside time to learn, share what you’re learning on social media or with friends and family. 3. Support Organisations. Contribute to or volunteer with organisations working to combat modern slavery and support survivors.
