Celebrating #WorldWetlandsDay on February 2nd! 🌏 UN World Wetlands Day aims to raise awareness about the vital role of these vital ecosystems for people and planet. Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, either seasonally or permanently, creating unique ecosystems that support diverse plant and animal life. 🌊 🌳 Coastal wetlands are wetland areas located at the interface of land and sea. They include marshes, swamps, and mangroves, providing essential habitats for marine and terrestrial species and offering valuable ecological services such as flood control, water purification, resilience against climate-related challenges, and contributions to the local and global economies. Despite being essential ecosystems, 90% of the world's wetlands have degraded since the 1700s, declining three times faster than forests. Together, let's reverse their rapid loss and ensure their conservation and protection! Blue Alliance and our local entities and partners in the Philippines, Indonesia, Zanzibar, and Belize contribute to the conservation and restoration of coastal wetlands like mangroves: 🌳 Thousands of hectares of mangroves conserved and partially restored in our MPAs in the Philippines, Zanzibar, Belize, and Indonesia. 🌳 Restoration and conservation of mangroves through the development of community-led blue carbon credit projects in our MPAs. 🌳 Ecotourism experiences such as the Calabash Caye Nature Trail in the TurneffeAtollMarineReserve, Belize. 🌳 Awareness and education programmes for tourists and local communities. By deepening our understanding of the ocean’s challenges, we can better equip ourselves with solutions to address them. Discover how we at Blue Alliance are protecting our ocean and empowering coastal communities in our MPA networks in the Philippines, Zanzibar, and Indonesia. 🔬 Science & conservation Whether it's monitoring wildlife and ecosystem health, protecting threatened marine species, or managing carrying capacities, everything we do is based on hard scientific data, including evaluating our own performance. 🚤 Compliance & enforcement We design adaptive management plans, conduct joint patrols with local authorities, develop alternatives to poaching and illegal fishing practices, drive conservation awareness, implement training programmes, and provide necessary equipment and support to increase compliance in our MPAs. 👫 Community development We create job opportunities in our MPAs and reef-positive businesses, offer sustainable alternative livelihoods, provide education and capacity-building, enhance the resilience of coastal communities, and promote social entrepreneurship and economic empowerment, with a particular focus on women. 🎣 Sustainable revenues The reef-positive businesses in and around MPAs all contribute to the Blue Economy. Galicia, Spain’s westernmost coastal region, is an area famous for its landscapes of extensive green forests, green wooded valleys, wild beaches and lighthouses. In 2006 and 2016, the 3rd largest forest in the region was devastated by fires, destroying over 210 hectares of untouched #forest. 🔥🌲 In #Spain, we’ve partnered with Tierra Pura Foundation for an international standards verified project aimed at restoring degraded forests in #Galicia. 🌿 Covering 210 hectares, this project is poised to absorb approximately 173,000 tons of CO2 over the next 35 years, which would have the same effect as removing approximately 41,000 cars off the road per year. 🚗 We’re contributing significantly to our fight against climate change and empowering our mission to leave a positive impact for the Galician forest and in the communities we serve. This data shows us that the health of our urban economies largely depends on the health of our ecosystems. Faced with the growing threat of climate change, driven by human activity, it is more crucial than ever to restore and protect our biodiversity. Species loss, soil degradation, and other environmental ravages are generating devastating impacts on our communities and economies. 📍 It's time to recognize the interconnectedness between nature and urban prosperity.
