Our esteemed colleagues Mike Salthouse, Head of External Affairs, and Mark Church, Head of Sanctions Advice, are both attending and speaking at this year’s Marine Insurance London. This year, the conference is held at etc. Venues’ 155 Bishopsgate on 22 March. Mike is providing the keynote address at the 11.50 session, on the topic: Can politics and shipping mix? The session aims to provide insight on how political volatility can play havoc with plans and result in massive claims for insurers. This keynote considers what insurers can change to drive the narrative and increase the understanding among politicians about the vital role shipping and its insurers play in keeping the world moving. Along with other industry experts, Mark is part of the 16.00 panel on: How do sanctions impact leaders and followers? Using theoretical examples, the discussion aims to dissect how we have all been living with economic sanctions for some years as politicians often resort to financial weapons rather than war. However, as the world becomes ever more polarised politically, there are growing concerns that sanctions are splitting the insurance industry, too, making it difficult for some carriers to operate while others are free to do so. Honored to be quoted in this excellent story in The Washington Post on a "dark" tanker crash that exposed the supply line from Iran to China of sanctioned oil. The world economy has always been split between the legitimate and the illicit. By our approach to sanctions and our lack of strategic diplomacy, however, we have pushed a lot of bad actors into a position of working together such that they are now creating a third parallel economy. The "sanctioned economy" involving states like Iran, Russia, Venezuela and North Korea are increasingly forming a community together with key enablers - led by China. China is looking to be the major hegemon in all three global economies, and we are failing to thwart that effort. Transparency regarding this sort of energy play to buy Iran's oil is a good view into China's behavior. But if we do not take this situation seriously, it will be too late to stop them from breaking the Bretton Woods System and causing tremendous global upheaval. This may seem like a story about a maritime incident, but it is really a story about the grand strategy to change the world order. https://lnkd.in/eR7SZecH

So IF we sanction #Russian shadowfleet, would it be considered #escalation? "Officially, the shadow fleet doesn’t exist. These rickety, uninsured vessels, running oil from #Russia to #China, #India, and others, live off-book as they cruise the world’s oceans to dodge sanctions." "The shadow vessels travel through the waters of countries that have no oil dealings with Russia but foot the bill each time one of these vessels has an accident in their waters. Last month, the shadow oil tanker Andromeda Star, which is, as is normal for shadow vessels, managed by an obscure firm and was sold to undisclosed buyers at the end of 2023, hit a cargo vessel just off the coast of #Denmark." "Ordinarily, the tanker’s insurance would have covered the incident. But because the Andromeda Star is a shadow vessel, it lacked the Western insurance that is the industry standard. Instead, it is insured by a mysterious Russian outfit that’s unlikely to pay out a single krone." "Denmark’s taxpayers may never recover the money the authorities spent attending to the incident. Fortunately, the Andromeda Star had its accident while traveling to Russia, its tanks empty." "The Russian ships are there to conduct ship-to-ship (STS) transfers, the highly hazardous business of transferring #oil from one vessel to another." "The Swedish public broadcaster SVT has tracked vessels sailing from the Russian port of Primorsk and the Ust-Luga fuel terminal to the waters off eastern Gotland, where they meet up with another tanker, the Zircone." "Indeed, as I argued in January, Russia could instruct shadow vessels to deliberately cause harm—a cheap and easy way of hurting #NATO member states. (It doesn’t help that the Zircone belongs to the Latvian company Fastbunkering, which is itself owned by an Estonian firm.)" #Maritime #Sanctions #internationalrelations https://lnkd.in/gHFWwx9S

Questioning Western Profiteering Amid Red Sea Turmoil: Houthi Attacks on Tankers Costing East Africa The recent surge of Houthi rebel attacks on tankers in the Red Sea has ignited suspicions regarding Western interests profiteering from the region's turmoil, ultimately burdening East Africa with escalated costs and security risks. This escalation of tensions, coupled with the economic repercussions for East Africa, prompts critical scrutiny of broader geopolitical motives. The Red Sea serves as a vital maritime route for global trade, yet recent Houthi attacks have disrupted shipping lanes, prompting Western military deployments under the guise of safeguarding international interests. However, some speculate these actions may serve as pretext for Western intervention, potentially exacerbating regional instability. East Africa, reliant on maritime trade routes for economic sustenance, bears the brunt of Red Sea turmoil. Heightened security concerns and increased insurance costs for vessels passing through the region translate into elevated expenses for East African businesses and consumers. Such disruptions threaten economic growth and compound existing socioeconomic challenges. Geopolitical interests loom large amidst the chaos. The Red Sea's strategic importance attracts competing regional and global powers, leading to Western military initiatives that may exploit regional instability for strategic gain. Amidst escalating tensions, calls for accountability and diplomatic resolutions intensify. Rather than exacerbating instability, stakeholders must prioritize dialogue and cooperation to address the root causes of conflict, ensuring the long-term stability and prosperity of the Red Sea and its surrounding areas The recent surge in Houthi attacks on tankers in the Red Sea raises questions about Western motives and the economic toll on East Africa. As suspicions of profiteering emerge, diplomatic solutions and conflict resolution become imperative to mitigate the economic and security challenges facing East Africa and the wider Red Sea region.

The UK has imposed sanctions on four tankers described as “Putin’s shadow fleet”, as well as Russian insurer Ingosstrakh and a Dubai-based shipmanager. The Cook Islands-flagged tankers Ocean Amz (IMO: 9394935), and Canis Power (IMO: 9289520), as well as Cameroon-flagged aframax Robon (IMO: 9144782) have been sanctioned, along with Gabon-flagged NS Laguna (IMO: 9339325), which is beneficially owned by Russia-controlled Sovcomflot. The shipmanager, One Moon Marine Services LLC, based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is the ISM manager of Ocean Amz. “Today’s action includes the UK’s first sanctions targeting vessels in Putin’s shadow fleet, used by Russia to circumvent UK and G7 sanctions and continue unfettered trade in Russian oil,” the UK government said in a press release announcing the move. In addition to the four tankers, two ships that shipped weapons to Russia, Lady R (IMO: 9161003) and Angara (IMO: 9179842) were sanctioned. Six entities supporting Russian LNG projects, as well as those linked to banks and the country’s nuclear sector were also named, plus companies involved in supplying munitions, machine tools, and other services as part of the war on Ukraine https://lnkd.in/eM4NESwz

🚢📰 What happened to these ships? The New York Times conducted a revealing investigation in the Sea of Japan! 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭? The New York Times tracked at least three tankers that were having an erratic behavior in the Sea of Japan. They soon discovered that it was a dark fleet; the ships were nowhere to be found in this area as satellite images shown: “For years, ships wanting to hide their whereabouts have resorted to turning off the transponders all large vessels use to signal their location.” 𝐁𝐮𝐭, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲? In reality, the ships were in completely different locations, and were likely to sell Russian oil to China: “[…] the tankers tracked by The Times go beyond this [turning off their transponder], using cutting-edge spoofing technology to make it appear they’re in one location when they’re really somewhere else. [...] During at least 13 voyages, the three tankers pretended to be sailing west of Japan. In reality, they were at terminals in Russia and shipping oil to China. […] The ships most likely sell their Russian oil to China above a price limit set by the sanctions." 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐬’ 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐑𝐅 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫𝐬? Our groundbreaking space-based RF detection technology allows the detection of ALL the vessels at sea, and especially dark ships which turn off their AIS transponders to evade legacy maritime surveillance systems. It is particularly useful for marine insurance companies that need to track the course of the ships they cover, as mentioned in The Times article: “[…] the tankers still have motive to spoof: to maintain their insurance coverage, without which they cannot operate in most major ports. The only insurers financially able to cover tankers are mostly based in the West and bound by the sanctions. If a client ship were to carry Russian oil that’s sold above the price limit, the Western insurer would be in violation of the sanctions and must drop its coverage.” Check out our official White Paper to learn more about our RF technology: https://swll.to/WYLZtM 🔗 Read the full article here: https://swll.to/BsniSb9 #TheNewYorkTime #Spoofing #MarineInsurance

Western commentators grapple with losing control over global shipping fleet. The rise of non-Western entities, driven by geopolitical shifts and sanctions, is unsettling their traditional dominance in shipping and resultant loss of revenue. However this shift is self-inflicted in some ways. TradeWinds #shipping #maritime #shipsandshipping #sanctions
