[NEWS] TravelPerk raises $200 million and acquires Yokoy Worldwide: Business travel platform TravelPerk has raised $200 million in Series E funding, valuing the company at $2.7 billion. The funding round was led by European venture capital firm Atomico alongside EQT Growth, with participation from Noteus Partners and existing investors including Kinnevik and Genera Catalyst. 20 fastest-growing VC ecosystems since the third quarter of 2017 - An impressive two-thirds of the 20 fastest-growing VC ecosystems are located in either the US or Europe, four times that of Asia (15%) - Dubai has topped a ranking of the world’s fastest growing venture capital (VC) ecosystems - Brazil’s commercial capital, São Paulo, was the only Latin American city to make it into the top 20. PitchBook generated these growth scores by combining data on VC deals, exits and fundraising in start-up ecosystems. Size and maturity scores were then calculated, weighted and combined to assess overall development of the ecosystems. Each location was assessed over various shorter and medium-term periods to smooth out fluctuations in market conditions.

This is a fabulous example of why Scotland needs to do more in benchmarking itself with global startup ecosystems and accelerating the requirement to attract high growth businesses whilst creating that global mindset and 'real-world' commercial ambition for Scottish high growth startups to go out and conquer the world #industry #investment #academia #entrepreneurs #commercialtalent #networks #ecosystems #publicsector #makingithappen

Yesterday, we released our comprehensive mapping of angel investors and venture capital in Europe, "State of European Angel Investing 2024", in collaboration with Nordic Angels. In the report (link in comments) we dive into the role of angels in the venture capital ecosystem, and what Europe can do to close the gap to the US particularly when it comes to scaling companies from early-stage ideas to late-stage success. We believe in Europe's fragmented landscape, angels can be instrumental in this. Had a great experience at the InMerge conference in Baku: special thanks to "PASHA Holding" LLC, Farrukh Ali and Jalal Gasimov for organizing this event and driving forward the culture of innovation in Azerbaijan. My talk, "Decoding the Venture Mindset", explored how investors and corporate innovators can leverage VC strategies for success in today's rapidly evolving business landscape.    8 key insights from my presentation:  1. The Venture Capital Impact: VC-backed companies represent 50% of all public U.S. companies founded since 1979 and account for 92% of R&D spending among these firms. 2. The Venture Mindset: I introduced many of the nine key principles that drive VC success, from "Home Runs Matter, Strikeouts Don't" to "Great Things Take Time.” 3. Embracing Failure: Only 15% of Fortune 500 companies from 1955 survived in the list by 2022. To avoid obsolescence, companies must take calculated risks. 4. Building an Innovation Pyramid: I shared strategies for creating a portfolio of innovative bets, from core business improvements to disruptive new ventures.  5. The Power of Networks: 31% of VC deals come from professional networks. I emphasized the importance of diverse connections and being open to unexpected opportunities.  6. Betting on People: 95% of VCs consider the team as the most crucial factor in investment decisions. I explored how this "jockey over horse" principle applies to corporate innovation.  7. Fostering Constructive Disagreement: We discussed how top VC firms encourage diversity of thought and avoid groupthink in decision-making.  8. Streamlined Decision-Making: I shared insights on keeping teams small and agile, with examples from successful VC firms and tech companies.    P.S. 🚀 Private equity and venture capital investors have once again identified potential IPO candidates from their portfolios in Finland. This year's list comprises 47 companies, 9 of which are newcomers to the annually published list. “What especially unites the companies on the list is their strong growth prospects. Many of them are market leaders in their fields or have tremendous potential for international growth. When asked why these companies are seen as potential IPO candidates, many investors also mention a well-known brand or ecological values, which are appealing to private investors,” comments FVCA's Managing Director Anne Horttanainen. “Companies’ IPO plans have been on hold for some time both in Finland and globally. However, compared to a year ago, we are seeing activity slightly picking up on Nasdaq Nordic markets. Based on discussions with advisors, many companies in Finland are ready to go public fairly quickly once the markets become more active,” comments Henrik Husman, President of Nasdaq Helsinki.
