I’m figuring out the distribution of proceeds from the North American High-Speed Rail summit, Wednesday May 28th at the Convention Center in Fresno, California after subtracting for the trip to Tokyo for the 12 speakers. Here is what I come up with based on a $100,000.00 example. This assumes the summit makes $100,000.00 after subtracting out $15,000.00 to send the 12 speakers to Tokyo: Cascadia High-Speed Rail: 25% $25,000.00 High-Speed Rail Alliance: 25% $25,000.00 Railvolution: 50% $50,000.00 Why so much for Railvolution? I’m going to ask them to handle registration for the 1,000 delegates, create a mobile app for the Summit, and handle the finances. Does this sound like a great plan?

The Swiss public transport system (SBB in German) has this cool app that lets you swipe-on and swipe-off for pretty much wherever you want to go in the country (apart from some tourist zones, I believe). If you want to go somewhere, you just swipe on the app, get on the train/boat/bus/tram, and then swipe off when you get to your destination. The app automatically bills you for the cheapest possible ticket based on your start/end location, and takes into account all sorts of discounts & regional passes etc. It's mostly a trust-based system, there are generally no turn sills or checks when you get into/out-of a train/tram/bus etc, but the fine for being caught without a ticket/app (they do random spot checks sometimes) is hefty, can be more than $180 (R3k) depending on your route and how many prior times you've not had a ticket on you.
