Vietnamese Travelers Seek Relaxation on Beach Vacations In Vietnam, the study reveals a preference for restorative and rejuvenating travel, mirroring the APAC average of 26%. For instance, Vietnamese travelers exhibit a strong affinity for beaches, with a selection rate of 59%, surpassing the 56% APAC average, reflecting the unique priorities and motivations shaping their travel decisions. Domestic Tourism Takes the Lead Across APAC, domestic tourism remains the primary driver of recovery, and Vietnam is no exception. Nearly half—49% of Vietnamese travelers opt to explore domestic destinations, while 31% prefer international travel. This is significantly lower than Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan, where 70% of respondents from these countries favor domestic travel. Price Sensitivity Steers Accommodation Choices In most of APAC, price sensitivity plays a crucial role, with nearly half of travelers in markets like Singapore, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia prioritizing price over all else when booking accommodations. In Vietnam, only 37% exhibit this price-conscious behavior. Vietnamese travelers, along with those from South Korea and India, while price-conscious, tend to consider additional factors such as room comfort and amenities when making decisions. Rise of Tech-Savvy Travel Platforms When it comes to digital tool usage in travel planning, 35% of surveyed Vietnamese travelers have embraced these tools. This indicates a growing trust in platforms like Traveloka, which simplify the process of booking travel services and offer flexible options. Cash Remains King During their trips, cash remains the most popular payment method for Vietnamese travelers, with over half (58%) using it. After years of uncertainty, tourism has roared back. It’s not just about ticking off bucket-list destinations anymore; people are craving deeper, more meaningful experiences. "Slow travel" is where it’s at — fewer stops, more time soaking up the local vibe. ✈️ 2. Going Green is the New Standard Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword anymore — it’s becoming the default. Eco-friendly hotels, less plastic, and more train travel (especially in Europe) are reshaping how we think about getting from A to B. People are starting to care about their travel footprint, which is a win for everyone. 🧑💻 3. Tech is Changing Everything AI is everywhere now — from booking trips to getting restaurant recommendations that feel eerily accurate. VR has also stepped up. Trying out 3D tours of hotels before booking? Kind of cool, but also kind of weird. Either way, tech is making travel way more personal and efficient. 🌟 4. Food Tourism is Huge Food isn’t just a side gig for travel anymore — it’s the main event. Whether it’s digging into local street food or joining a cooking class with a local chef, food is how people are connecting to places. Amazing to see some familiar names make an appearance in this NYT Travel Trends of 2025 article! It reaffirms the trajectory I've been seeing myself : slow, mindful travel is growing as a priority along with "digital detox" vacations, group travel for solo adventure seekers, and a growing interest in the more sustainable footprint of railway travel. Travelers seeking more affordable accommodations with no hidden fees, cozier vibes, are going to be moving away from sterile Airbnb options to home swapping platforms like Kindred that only list primary residences and thus don't contribute to the housing crisis seen in many major cities. Bonus points for staying somewhere with real plants and probably awesome coffee mug collections! Digital burnout is also driving the creation of "digital detox" clubs like The Offline Club® and travel arrangements like Unplugged where human connection and engagement is being cultivated through the cutting of digital ties - even if just for the afternoon or weekend. Simplified lifestyles and cutting back on the blue light is hopefully here to stay. As a solo female traveler, it's been amazing to see the trend of solo/group travel on the rise! This pocket of the industry embraces the reality that starting a journey alone doesn't mean it's got to end that way. Flash Pack stands out as a leader in this field with their focus on travelers in their 30s and 40s and I'm surprised they didn't get the mention, so .... here it is! With this article underscoring the projected challenges travelers will face with airline miles losing some of their spending power, it's no surprise that more people are looking at train travel. Not to mention, with sustainable and responsible tourism being added to many pre-travel check lists as an important value, I think companies like Byway are going to be making big waves with flight-free itineraries. Here's hoping their options can continue spreading to the US market!

However, for the industry and investors, it is not a winner-takes-all or OTA-exclusive market, as it involves certain complexities. Destination group tours typically include day trips, half-day tours, or local experiences purchased by travelers upon arriving at their holiday destinations. Their appeal lies in freeing independent travelers from the hassle of finding, comparing, and booking local transport, accommodation, dining, and activities. Language barriers also pose significant challenges, though AI is increasingly addressing this issue. Moreover, not all countries have the safety standards of East and Northeast Asia, making night-time travel possible. Destination group tours usually start at easily accessible locations or provide transportation directly from hotels, which is crucial for destinations poorly served by public transport. For example, in Taiwan, the Northeast Coast's Geopark and sky lantern experience routes exemplify such characteristics. In summary, destination group tours combine the comfort of organized tours with the flexibility of independent travel. Taking South Korea as an example, although there is no publicly available transaction data for destination group tours, the transaction volumes reported to the government by various OTA platforms and traditional travel products have rapidly increased, indicating a rise in the number of independent travelers. Consequently, the proportion of tourists directly purchasing overseas destination group tour products is also likely increasing. According to statistics from Wise App and Wise Retail, from July to December 2023, the total payment amount on several South Korean online overseas travel platforms was 1.065 trillion Korean won, an 85% increase from the same period in 2019 (576.1 billion won) before the COVID-19 pandemic. If overall modular travel products have grown 85% relative to 2019, it's undeniable that destination group tours likely performed even better. The next question is, who can profit from this sector? Typically, one-stop OTAs, local activity-style OTAs, domestic comprehensive travel agencies, niche new travel agencies, and even local destination management companies (DMCs) can enter the day tour market from different angles, and the number of agencies specializing in day tours for individual travelers is likely to increase further. Since these products target travelers who have already arrived at the destination and do not need to bundle flights or hotels, the entry barrier is relatively lower for small businesses; the greater resource needs are local transportation and guides.
