The National Transportation Safety Board released Special Aviation Investigation Report AIR-24-03, “Safety and Industry Data Improvements for Part 135 Operations." Part 135 refers to a set of the Federal Aviation Administration aviation regulations governing the operation of commuter, special missions, and on-demand air services - such as air charters, aeromedical, non-scheduled flights, and air taxis. Part 135 accident rates have historically been higher than Part 121 (commercial airline) operations, and the NTSB sought to close this gap while recognising that the diverse set of Part 135 operations include additional risks. Through evaluating 576 Part 135 accidents that occurred between 2010 and 2022, the NTSB found trends and similarities that led to safety-based recommendations particularly around certificated dispatch procedures & training, strict weight & balance record-keeping, flight data monitoring, and standardisation of flight operations. The full report is insightful in providing a deep dive into the broad spectrum of Part 135 operations, and how different they are to scheduled commercial airline operations. Treating the two operations as the same, and applying the same set of safety requirements is not feasible, and the NTSB should be commended for considering how to improve Part 135 operations without adding undue challenges. #aviationsafety #pilottraining #aviation #aerospace #safetymanagement

How well are you prepared for Regulatory Changes in Aviation Screening? The Civil Aviation Authority communicated out to Airport Operators in April an update from the background check review they conducted throughout 2023 which contained both standalone changes and more significant changes. These changes are to be implemented in 2 phases throughout 2024, impacting Air Carriers, Handling Agents, Air cargo regulated Agents and Regulated suppliers of in-flight supplies. While Airport Operators & ID centres have yet to communicate out the date they will implement the first phase of changes, screening teams and providers should be preparing for this now! How well prepared is your organisation for change? #Aviation #Vetting #Screening #backgroundchecks

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has raised concerns about the safety systems in Mexico's aviation sector and warned that the country's aviation safety category may be downgraded from 1 to 2. The ICAO has given Mexico 90 days to resolve the identified problems before issuing a report on the deficiencies. The deadline for fixing these problems is July 8th, and experts believe that the ICAO verdict will be crucial in maintaining the Category 1 status. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will also be influenced by the ICAO's decision and may apply a downgrade if necessary. Mexico's Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation stated that they have been implementing a radio aid verification program and have achieved 95% progress throughout the country. Without the Category 1 status, Mexico cannot open new commercial routes, particularly to the United States. The potential downgrading by the FAA would make Mexico the first country to be downgraded so quickly since it regained Category 1 in September 2023 after two years in Category 2. #oaci #airlines #aircraft #aviationnews
