📚 Expanding Perspective • As I continue my journey in the education sector, I’m reminded of the importance of seeking out diverse perspectives to truly understand the big picture. This week, I’m diving into the thought-provoking works of John Taylor Gatto, a former teacher and outspoken critic of the traditional education system. Gatto’s books, including Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling, The Underground History of American Education, and Weapons of Mass Instruction, challenge conventional ideas about education. He explores how standardized systems can stifle creativity and individuality, raising important questions about what education should really accomplish. While some consider his perspective controversial, it’s also an important lens through which to examine the system’s strengths and flaws. It was a privilege to begin the Middle Years Diagnostic and School Improvement process with Eliza Lane and the Middle Years team from Silkwood School this morning. Together, we began to reflect upon and gather evidence using the Tool. As is the case with all we are working with, so much thought provoking conversation occurred, with diverse and considered perceptions and insights as the leaders and teachers delved deeply into the work they are doing. Our process together has just begun, and we are looking forward to continuing next term. 🌟🌟Today, we began with a quick provocation: Is it possible to improve on something that is already good? And how might we do that? This provided a great platform for the reflective process. 🌟We know that middle schooling is an intentional approach, grounded in a deep knowledge and understanding of who our young people are during this developmental phase.
