The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) examined single-family building permits across 261 metro areas to identify housing construction trends. Nationally, housing starts peaked in 2005 and hit a low in 2009, with current levels below the historical average. Locally, some metro areas like Houston and Dallas exceed their historical averages in single-family permits, while others like Chicago lag behind. Smaller metro areas show a 26.1% increase in permits, outperforming larger areas, which only see a 9.3% increase.
