I keep coming across this ship… both in news articles and literally in Philly… But, it seems it might finally have a solution and some good news headed its way: “Historic ship could soon become the world's largest artificial reef”   It’s pending a resolution to a court ordered mediation, but “a Florida county inked a tentative deal to turn the ship into the world’s largest artificial reef.” Better than rotting away and becoming scrap metal.   Interesting that the $10 million cost is justified by the county not for conservation purposes but for tourism purposes. I need more information on that – I think of artificial reefs being for ecological restoration, but I guess if you make a new diving habitat that can keep divers away from endangered reefs there is a benefit there as well.   https://lnkd.in/esDK3_dP #letsmakeplans #themedentertainment #history #nostalgia #environment

The Secret Life of Swallows: A Tale from a Resident of Luxembourg In a serene corner of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg called Fentange, nests a species of swallow: (Delichon urbicum), a migratory bird whose life is a testament to survival and adaptation. In their summer homes, these birds continue to demonstrate a remarkable ability to integrate into urban environments. Here, from the warm summer comfort of Luxembourg, I had the opportunity to document, in my own house, one of their ingenious bowl-shaped nests made of mud, typically installed under the windowsills and eaves of local buildings. It goes without saying that these creatures provide us with an important ecological service, considering that an average swallow consumes about 850 insects daily, which is invaluable if we understand them as biological pest controllers. Their urban colonies offer an important source of guano (manure) that can be collected and used as organic fertilizer for domestic and garden plants, which I can attest to as I have been using it for over three years with extraordinary results. Fortunately, their wide distribution and considerable population size mean that this animal is not globally threatened. Few predators can match their swift and erratic flight, allowing this species to continue its graceful dance in the skies. In a constantly changing world, this diminutive creature offers us a lesson in adaptation and resilience. From the tranquil Luxembourgish villages to the vibrant skies of Africa, their migratory journey is a thread that connects continents and seasons. Greetings to all nature lovers.
