The pitch of our voices can determine higher social rank and income. Research shows that high pitch is generally seen as lacking authority, while low pitch is perceived as commanding. Vocal dynamics was the main topic of a lively conversation with Fara Sax, host of Community Voice at Miami's Community Newspapers this week. We talked about speech patterns like upspeak and the overuse of filler words and what they say about us. We touched on women's voices in history and how the ancient Greeks (who invented rhetoric) denied women a place in the public square. Aristotle said "Silence is a woman's glory." No kidding. Here are some bits of trivia about women's voices from the broadcast: ►Across the globe, female voices in Japan have the highest pitch, while those in The Netherlands are the lowest. ►Britain's Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher underwent extensive voice coaching to lower the pitch of her voice and command authority. ►Marilyn Monroe, on the other hand, changed her normal speaking voice to the soft, breathy and seductive tone of her on-screen persona.
