Summer Intern Spotlight (Part 1) Ashlin Gibson '24 (Dec.), Civil and Environmental Engineering Structural Design intern, Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering West Columbia, South Carolina "This summer, I have been working on the I-26/I-95 Interchange Improvement project. Specifically, I have been utilizing Bentley’s OpenBridge Designer software to create plan sheets for the replacement of the I-95 mainline bridge at the project site. Among these plans, I worked on the median barrier sheet [see image below]. Through this work, I gained a deep understanding of rebar callouts and their respective terminologies. Structural rebar in bridge plans is identified by its shape, size, and intended location within the bridge, and can include suffixes that indicate special considerations for fabrication. I also learned how to track every piece of rebar in a bridge using a rebar schedule, which helps quantify the required rebar weight and the lengths needed by the fabricator."

MEET THE INTERNS! Name: Sam Tarleton Role: Student Civil & Structural Engineer Department: Structural Engineering College Degree: Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering in University College Cork Hobbies: Rugby, music, and running. Favourite project and why? I’ve been involved in numerous projects so far that have been both interesting and challenging. My favourite of these projects has been a medical device manufacturing facility that is currently under construction. My contributions to this project have included both structural and civil engineering design, giving me a wide variety of tasks on a day-to-day basis. My main tasks have included structural analysis modelling, steel design and reinforced concrete design .A recent site visit to this project helped me see the real-world applications of my design and gave me a better overall understanding of the project. Experience gained so far: I have gained brilliant experience so far in multiple areas, mainly structural design. The use of software like SCIA Engineer, Navisworks and Tekkla Tedds on a daily basis has helped me become proficient in using them to analyse and design structures. I have become much more efficient with certain areas of design that I wouldn’t have previously been very confident with. Working with a team of such experienced engineers and technicians has sped up my learning hugely. The advice and guidance I’m receiving will be invaluable for both my final college year and my future career. Most challenging and rewarding aspects of your role: I found the most challenging aspect of the role was at first having to revise over certain areas of design we haven’t covered in a year or two and getting used to it again. The most rewarding aspect I found was the constant learning on the go that happens every time I’m assigned a new job. Being able to bounce between different team members and use their knowledge and experience to aid me when attempting something new makes learning so much quicker and more rewarding. Aims for the next few years: My aim once I complete my placement here is to finish out my fifth and final year of my integrated masters programme to the best of my ability. I’m sure that my experienced gained during this internship will help me greatly in my final year, especially with my final year design project and choosing what sector I want to pursue after college. #mwp #engineering #consultancy #interns

Completed A Journey Of New Learnings 😊 I just completed @John Holland Australia's Civil Engineering on @[Forage](urn:li:organization:68514998). In the simulation I: * Completed a job simulation working across a range of construction tasks including a new bridge, high-rise, and rail. * Calculated the volumes of concrete for pile caps and abutments for a bridge and compared subcontractor rates. * Compared two building drawings to identify differences and arranged tasks in the correct sequencing order. * Reviewed placement of CCTV camera at an island stop to ensure safety requirements were met. #learning #internship #forage

I carried out my internship at Krapa Structural Consultancy The purpose of the program is to gain real-world experience and knowledge in whatever academic field a student chooses and often these opportunities can, when approached with the right attitude and with the right timing, lead to a potential career after college. This study involves the detailed estimation of various Reinforced Concrete (RCC) elements like Slab, Beam, Column, Footing, Lintel, Sunshade etc. The project focused on the preparation of Drafting and Detailed estimation for RCC and load-bearing structures of a government-subsidized godown expansion Yojna. Another project entailed the Estimation of Building components including Foundations, Columns, Slabs, Beams, Lintels, Sunshades, Boundary walls, Septic tanks, and Infrastructure like Roads and Cable trenches, for multiple Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Pipeline) stations along the Dahej to Dhumat route. I hope I tried to do my internship report more precise, brief and clear. The purpose of this report is to explain what I did and learned during an internship from 29th June to 12th July 2024. Through this hands-on experience, a thorough understanding of Estimation methodologies, Quantity calculations, and Cost analysis for large-scale RCC structures was gained. The report shows an overview of tasks done during internship in detail.

Have you considered a career in construction for a loved-one, a friend, or for yourself? I fell into construction by happenstance. In high school I signed up for several sessions on career day and got none of them. Instead I was assigned to aeronautical engineering and civil engineering. I didn't know what engineering was, but I learned on that fateful day and I never looked back. When I got to college, I didn't realize how many different paths existed in civil engineering alone...various design options, geotechnical, environmental, and construction. And, within all these disciplines, there are even more career paths like the public sector, private, educational, consulting, etc. Those who are exposed to the construction industry are often drawn in! In a digital world, it is hard to replace something as tangible as what we experience in construction. Whether someone is a painter, designer, carpenter, general contractor, inspector, landscaper, or anything in between, there is a ton of pride in the industry. When that person drives by one of the sites they touched, they say, "That was my project." Construction isn't just about swinging a hammer or painting a wall, although both amazing trades. There are so many aspects that fit so many different interests. Additionally, as college becomes more and more expensive, one should consider options with dual enrollment, stackable credentials, and apprenticeships. A career in construction is lucrative, fulfilling, and engaging. I encourage you to learn more about this pathway and I have a great suggestion on how to do it! I am helping moderate a discussion on Friday the 18th (in person) to help highlight different opportunities in this field. Santa Clara Construction Careers Association (S4CA) created this session for high school counselors, and we welcome all others who are interested in learning more as well!
