As we reflect on the legacy of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, it's important to recognize both the significant achievements and the challenges of his time in office. Mulroney was a figure of transformation, whose tenure reshaped Canada in many ways. On the positive side, Mulroney's tenure saw the Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement, which opened doors to economic growth and closer ties with our biggest trading partner. His commitment to environmental protection led to crucial treaties on acid rain and the Convention on Biological Diversity, highlighting Canada's role on the global stage as a leader in environmental stewardship. Mulroney's introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), though controversial, modernized Canada's tax system, laying the groundwork for a more competitive economy. Conversely, Mulroney's time also saw challenges. The failure of the Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords marked significant setbacks in constitutional reform efforts, reflecting the complexities of Canadian federalism and national unity. His government faced criticism over introducing the GST due to its initial unpopularity, showcasing the difficulties in implementing necessary yet contentious policy reforms. Furthermore, the Airbus affair brought attention to ethics and transparency issues, underscoring the importance of accountability in public office. In remembering Brian Mulroney, it's crucial to focus on the positive impacts of his policies and the bold steps he took to position Canada as a competitive and environmentally conscious nation on the world stage. While not without its controversies, Mulroney's tenure was a period of significant change, reflecting a vision for a prosperous, united, and forward-looking Canada. His legacy, with its highs and lows, serves as a reminder of the complex nature of governance and the enduring impact of leadership on the nation's path. Thanks to Lori Armitage for a post that inspired me to look up Mr. Mulroney, I had forgotten his accomplishments. Even when you look at something like the Airbus Affair, while not completely transparent, he did successfully sue the Canadian government a few years later for a couple of million dollars. My recollection of him then, as now, was that he was one "slick character" and a true politician. I can only imagine what went on behind closed doors. #ripBrianMulroney

The public has the right to feel assured that their deceased loved ones are safe and secure, regardless of where they are cared for, but the current self-regulatory approach leaves some businesses and settings outside of oversight and bereaved consumers without recourse to an independent complaints or redress service. The NAFD has already called on the UK Government to strengthen the oversight of the funeral profession. We believe it is critically important to ensure that all funeral homes are held to the same high standards and that the responsibility for this should not be borne alone by trade associations – but also underpinned by Government.
