If you have seen my website you know making surgical videos is one of my passions. Being able to share techniques, tips and pearls is invaluable. Let’s talk breast implant illness. I attended the CSPS meeting this weekend and the top surgeons at both ASPS and the Aesthetic Society spoke. Both mentioned BII. It’s no longer good enough for surgeons to say “oh I don’t know about BII.” Breast implant safety is the #1 critical issues for ASPS! There is controversy about whether patient needs to have total capsulectomy. That part of the discussion is between a woman and her surgeon. Where massage therapists come in is when the surgeon suggests the client massage the breasts to address scar tissue, etc. after explant. Let me get on my soapbox. If we are going to offer breast massage after explant, we NEED to know 1. About BII and 2. How to keep client with BII safe and comfortable during their session. Explant clients because of BII and explant client because they just didn’t like their implants are DIFFERENT clients. No one-size-fits-all approach. ‘Oh I didn’t learn about BII in my class, why do I need to learn about their condition? can’t I just give them some MLD?’ is not good enough. Bottom line: The client deserves to have a MT that knows about their condition.
