Performing good deeds just to be noticed and expecting something in return diminishes the value of the good act itself. I've observed many social media posts where vulnerable children and individuals are exploited for marketing and recognition. I have been deeply involved in community development since primary school, influenced by my upbringing and the philosophy of "ubuntu." While I am grateful for the positive actions taken on Mandela Day for 67 minutes, I am concerned about the rest of the year. It's heartbreaking to see the hope ignited in children's eyes, only for them to return to the same dire circumstances. Doing good is not just about providing financial assistance or food; it’s about the emotional commitment you make when you reach out to someone in need. Philanthropists, NPO’s, the government, and companies need to implement more strategic measures to support the vulnerable and less fortunate, as it is our moral duty to genuinely care for those who cannot help themselves, without expecting anything in return. Consider ways to support the vulnerable, even if it's just helping one child per year—it can make a lifetime difference to that child's future! Over 113,000 of these children are eligible for adoption and they will wait, on average, almost three years for an adoptive family. We work with several agencies throughout the country to connect these children to an adoptive family. By keeping track of data, these partner agencies can connect the children and family together. There are many heartwarming stories about how keeping track of data can accomplish this goal. That's such a tangible concept to imagine - of course, kids shouldn't have their things in garbage bags. But those ads always make us wonder "What if there were a healthy, familiar grown-up attached to that suitcase?" Isn't that what they really need? For New Years, I have committed to three things: 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: In 2023 I was allowed to volunteer with various @AWS-sponsored programs to help provide supplies for disadvantaged men, women, and children. This year, I am committing to volunteering outside AWS to help clean up my local community and beaches. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐬: From discussions I have had with Amy Elliott-Villegas before the New Year's End, I have made it a goal to fundraise and donate $5,000 to the United Methodist Children's Home. As an early contribution, I will commit the first $1,000 toward this goal. 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞: I am committed to maintaining a strict peleo diet during New Year's. No processed carbs, no soda, no junk food. My diet will consist of whole foods, meat, nuts & berries, and water.
