Meet Michael Yorker, our Global Facilities Manager based in Mountain View, California. Michael’s journey of coming out and finding a supportive community is a testament to the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community. 🌈 "I grew up in Turlock, California, where I came out at 18 in 1990 to my conservative parents. Like many in the LGBTQ+ community, I had to move out that day and didn’t speak with my family for many years. Seeking a supportive community where I could be myself, I moved to San Francisco, where I quickly found my new family. In the early 90s, I was an active member of ActUp and Queer Nation, and I continue to support organizations like the Trevor Project, Human Rights Campaign Fund, and SF AIDS Walk. I'm also an advocate for the Trevor Project's 'It Gets Better' campaign, believing in the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ youth and promoting a message of hope and resilience. While times have changed, the journey toward full equality continues." Join us in celebrating Michael’s story and the ongoing journey toward equality. 🎉 #PrideMonth #TreasureDataPride #LGBTQStories

As Pride Month wraps up, let's acknowledge the challenges those within the LGBTQ+ community face daily. In terms of personal finance alone, LGBTQ+ adults experience: 1) Lower earnings compared to heterosexual adults with the same qualifications: Gay men earn 10-32% less than similarly qualified heterosexual men. 2) Denial of employment: In 2021, 1 in 10 LGBTQ+ people reported being fired or denied a job because of their sexual orientation. 3) Higher percentages of poverty: 21.6% of LGBTQ+ adults (18-44) live in poverty compared to 15.7% of heterosexual adults. At 3rd Decade, we proudly make our organization and program inclusive and supportive for everyone. Though our work alone won't take away the injustices experienced by the LGBTQ+ community, we work to be a safe and welcoming space for all. #3rddecade #pride #pridemonth #usa #az #nonprofit #financiallit #youngadult #volunteer #mentor

No organization or person can stop me from personally talking about #PrideMonth and the strength and amazingness of the LGBTQ+ community. Why? Because, for some, it's literally life or death. That matters more to me than my comfort or the comfort of large organizations who will do just fine whether or not they support us. And if a company or person doesn't want me to personally advocate for human beings to stay alive and for marginalized communities to be treated equitably, that's a "them" problem, not a "me" problem. I'll sleep just fine at night, knowing I'm standing up for what's right and good in this world and standing up for all of God's children -- especially those most vulnerable. Here are some stats from The Trevor Project that you should read through, reflect on, and take action to improve. The facts are that anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and policies are hurting LGBTQ+ people, especially youth. We should all want our children to survive and thrive. That should not be controversial. 🛍 There is quite a bit I could say here, but I will keep it simple. If you are purchasing Pride 🌈 themed products, please take time to research the brand you are purchasing from to ensure there is an authentic and intentional connection and/or give back to the LGBTQ+ community. Also, if you are a brand owner (outside of the LGBTQ+ community) that is selling Pride themed products, commit to donating the proceeds to an LGBTQ+ organization. Otherwise, both of these examples are forms of performative capitalism and allyship. Note: Be kind to yourself. Nobody is perfect and it is hard sometimes to know the connection and giveback to the LGBTQ+ community. Do the best you can and commit to expanding your research with each purchase. ❤️ I have lots more tips about brands and Pride purchasing, please feel free to reach out if you need support in this part of your allyship journey! #BrandAuthenticity #Pride2024 #PrideMonth #LGBTQ+

It's World Pride Month....and sorry adding a rainbow to your product is not Allyship - it's marketing. While it's wonderful to see rainbows everywhere, it's important to remember that true allyship goes beyond adding a rainbow to your product or website. Allyship means: ❤️ Listening and Learning: Taking the time to understand the experiences and challenges of the LGBTQ+ community. 💜 Supporting and Empowering: Amplifying LGBTQ+ voices, supporting LGBTQ+ businesses, and advocating for equal rights. 💙 Creating Inclusive Environments: Ensuring your workplace and products are genuinely inclusive and safe for everyone, not just during Pride Month but all year round. 💛 Taking Action: Donating to LGBTQ+ causes, participating in events, and pushing for policies that support the community. Adding a rainbow to your product can be a symbol of support, but without meaningful action, it risks being seen as just another marketing tactic. Let's make this World Pride Month not just about visible support, but about real, impactful allyship. Together, we can make a difference. #worlpridemonth #LGBTQplusallyship #inclusiveworkplace #realsupport

According to a 2024 report from the Public Religion Research Institute, nearly 30% of Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ+. When we talk about what it looks like to support and care for the next generations of our LGBTQ+ community, it is imperative that we recognize the unique needs of our young people who are coming of age in an era of more visibility than ever before—and a hostile political climate. We need to continue to make sure that LGBTQ+ young people are connected with supportive programs and services, both at school and in their local community, that can help them navigate their identities. We will continue to fight for full lived and legal equality so that LGBTQ+ young people learn about rather than experience discrimination in the classroom. #LGBTQ #Equality #ProtectLGBTQYouth #LGBTQYouth

Inclusion is about creating spaces for everyone. No individual is defined only by one of their characteristics and none of these characteristics remain unchanging throughout their lives. Being neurodivergent, for example made learning harder when I was younger but it now is what drives me and makes me productive. Having moved to England 20 years ago, I became the English girl for the Greeks and the foreigner for the English. I have an accent, even though I trained to be an English teacher and taught in secondary schools while I kept receiving strange looks every time I opened my mouth. My grandfathers escaped the Pontiac genocide and moved from country to country to find a better future. Education became my family’s mission, even though humility stayed with us no matter how much had been achieved. My skin is olive, not peach. Why am I listing all these features? Because intersectionality makes me who I am and there is no space in which I can truly belong as we keep trying to put people in boxes. Yet, how many of us can claim to only have one characteristic that defines who they are? And how monotonous would the world be if that was the case? Let’s fight for wonderful diversity and create spaces that can hold so much more than just a mask. Inclusion is belonging. And diversity is within us.

Inclusion is either intersectional, or it is BS. One of the more fascinating things about DEI is that as humans our identities intersect. The problem is, so do our biases. Too often, advocates end up excluding others fighting for the same cause: 👉🏾 White feminists have burned racially marginalized women, leading to the birth of Black, Latina, and other feminist movements. 👉🏾 Black and other racially marginalized women have often been ignored in racial justice movements, creating the same scenario mentioned above. 👉🏾 Black LGBTQ+ advocates experience racism in LGBTQ+ circles and homophobia or transphobia in the Black community. Hence the formation of Black LGBTQ+ advocacy. 👉🏾 In all communities, folks with disabilities have said 1000× over that their needs are almost always left out of conversations about creating equitable spaces. You cannot step on the heads of other marginalized folks while advocating for your own equality. Otherwise, you're erecting the same barriers you are working to tear down. #Diversity #Inclusion #Equality #DiversityAndInclusion #Belonging Image description: Illustration of a person surrounded by arrows pointing inward, each describing a different identity that makes up a part of the individual.
