Greenhouse gases emitted in port present a significant portion of shipping emissions overall. Why has progress been so slow in reducing them? Our Deputy CEO Jonatan Höglund was invited to the Alfa Laval - Marine solutions Innovation Summit to talk about Furetank’s emission-saving measures, like the shore power connection now being installed in every newbuild leaving the shipyard. He was asked about the risks of deciding to invest in environmental technology before the infrastructure is in place. ”There are so many different regulations and standards around the world. You don’t really know which direction to go, you just need to make an educated guess. New guidelines on shore power are being written as we speak, and we don’t know what will come out of it. At the same time, the investments we make are on a very long timescale and retrofitting our vessels will be even more expensive and complicated. Matthias Reichmann, product manager at Accelleron, introduced Engine Part Load Optimisation (EPLO) for two-stroke engines, a simpler, cost-effective retrofitting option. “The key takeaway is a 3% reduction in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions,” Reichmann stated, emphasising EPLO’s potential for immediate gains.

“Replacing propellers is a key step in our fleet upgrade program,” noted Wolfram Guntermann, director of regulatory affairs at Hapag-Lloyd AG, explaining that these changes can reduce fuel consumption by 5-8%, a crucial improvement as vessels operate at slower speeds.

Close collaboration plays a crucial role in our decarbonization efforts. Unifeeder A/S and MPC Container Ships ASA have recently formed a strategic partnership to jointly invest in Energy Efficiency Technology. Our goal is to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact in maritime transport. These investments will be shared between Unifeeder, the charterer, and MPC, the vessel owner - and such collaborations can be a blueprint for the industry. Together, we are driving forward our commitment to cut emissions by 47% by 2030 and supporting our customers in accelerating their Scope 3 reductions.
