Deformation compatibility is critical for achieving a real seismic damage avoidance system. Tectonus resilient braces are being specified by end pin connections allowing the required rotation for desirable pure axial loading. Use of pin end connections has always been bringing installation challenges for the systems with no possibility of length adjustment such as BRB’s. As such, bolted connections are being preferred for those, requiring to be tested as per the US code to evaluate the rotational flexibility. Those installation challenges not only are not applicable to Tectonus braces (given the possibility of shimming between the Tectonus device and the brace body during assembly), but also the use of pin provides the opportunity of adding swivel bearings for controlling the eccentricity due to the frame out-of-plane deformation to prevent any potential damage (already been considered by one of our clients as an efficient solution).
